Crumb Coating

Ok I have a silly question... I see alot of you all talking about a crumb coating... what is this, what does it mean?

its just a thin coat of icing that you put on the cake to seal the crumbs. Just use a thinned out buttercream, cover the cake and any loose crumbs, let it sit for awhile to crust over, then place your outside layer of frosting on. this way you never have crumbs in your frosting

no question is stupid when you are learning.... like we all are on this site!!!

Crumb coating is putting a very thin layer of icing around your cake. I guess you could say it coats your crumbs so they don't end up in your frosting on top of the cake!!!
