of course it can be done!!! if you look at half of the 3D cakes in here....most of them are done with bc frosting!!!!!!! you don't nessarily have to smooth it either you can star tip the whole thing if need be..hope this helps!!!! i am sure others will have terrific ideas for you!!!!!

I agree that it can be done. I did a 3-D school bus all in buttercream.

I did a monster truck in almost all butter cream. Only the mirrors sticking out and tieres were fondant. I think only the fondant one is in my pics, but it can be done!

Best advice I can give is freeze the cake before you carve it. Once it's carved, put it back in the freezer to firm it back up, then take it out, crumb coat it while it's frozen, then leave the cake at room temperature to thaw out and let the crumb coat set at room temp. Then you can ice in BC and it won't pull all your cake out and crumb up on you! Take a look at my Thomas the Tank Engine cake. I did that at room temperature and it was a nightmare. It came out great (my opinion), but only after hours and hours and layer upon layer of BC to get it smooth!! I learned to freeze my 3D cakes from the pillow cake demo on this site and it's made my 3D life so much easier!! But it can be done! Good luck! Post a pic so we can see when you're done!

If I've learned anything from this site, it's if it can be done, some one on this site has either done it, knows how to do it, or has seen it done. There is a lot of ingenuity and imagination on this site. I once used a thin royal icing for my crumb coating to help stabalize my cake, it works well and you end up with a cake that has a kind of shell on it, making it easier to smooth your BC. Freezing also does wonders for 3D cakes.

Crusting buttercream! No problem! icon_smile.gif The semi in my photos would work, just stack a nice box shape instead of the flatbed. Word of advice- support structure need! icon_smile.gif
