Hello you all! Does anybody know anything about these edible ink printers; I think they are Epson and Cannon? Has anybody used them and if so what do you have to say about them? I am considering buying this and any comments/suggestion would be greatly appreciated and thanks! Awnee icon_biggrin.gif

I have an Epson C88+. Absolutely love it! Rudy at Kopykakes recommended
it to me. With an Epson, you need to get a chip re-setter and I got that off of EBAY.

I also have the Epson c88+ and I love it. I am only on my 2nd set of black ink, the color is about to run out, and I have gone through 4 packs of frosting sheets. No problems yet, just have to clean the print head every so often.

I have an Epson CX7800 and love it!

It doesn't have to cost you a fortune to get started. You can find refurbished or closeout printers either on Ebay or online from a lot of computer stores, then just buy the cartridges and frosting sheets separately.

I spent right at $150 for my system and I use it all the time. Not so much for edible image cakes, but to do some decorations (images of poker cards and such) and especially the writing on cakes. I hate writing on cakes with frosting (after 20 years, I'm still lousy at it) and have virtually eliminated having to write by hand using edible images.

I have a Cannon and it's OK. DH bought it and it takes 5 ink cartridges, which is really my only complaint. Whenever I'm not printing an edible image, I keep the cleaning heads in it and when I do that I don't have a problem with the heads clogging. I think it also helps to save on ink.
Please note that you really must purchase a new printer that has never had regular ink run through it. These days printers are cheap! Just check any offfice supply store.

icon_biggrin.gif I have the Epson C88+ I love it. I have used it about a dozen times. The only thing that I have found, and it's probably the frosting sheets, you need to set your paper thickness before you print, because the edge of the frosting sheet may crumble a little bit. Other than that I LOVE my edible images. It's so fun to see someones face, when they see what ever picture has been printed for them. It's cool. icon_biggrin.gif Have fun.

It might have been because I let HUBBY print the first image on the new printer. icon_razz.gif I haven't had any other trouble since then. He found by adjusting the settings for like card stock it didn't have any issues after that. Might have also been the frosting sheets. I don't know, but all is well now.

I have to say it was hubby that bought me the printer, it was only right to at least let him make the first mess in it!! icon_biggrin.gif Like guys do sometimes. lol.

I called kopykake before I made my purchase and spoke with them about this.

I was told that refurbished printers are safe for use even though they have been most likely tested after being refurbished. The person I spoke with also said that even used printers are fine. He suggested running a couple of test pages through the printer once the edible inks were installed just to make sure that any old ink was purged through the printer. The reason for doing that was to make sure that you wouldn't have a problem with the quality of your first few edible images though, not for safety reasons.

I was surprised to be told you could use a used printer, but since it's ok to use refurbished printers, I guess it makes sense.

They told me the same thing but if I can get a new one for $50 or $60 I'm not willing to take a chance with a used one..........but that's just me.

K guys, here's a little tip i learned from my boss.
If you happen to have a cartridge that is runnin low on ink and it's refillable you can use a syringe and airbrush colors that match the ink and refill it. He's been doin this for years.

I believe the ink is non toxic anyway. I think that is why they say it doesnt matter. I cant remember who told me or where I read it but the ink is made out of something that you wouldnt expect it to be. I will have to double check but Im pretty sure that is why they say that.

It makes sense to go ahead and buy a new one, especially if you can get it cheap, but a couple of months ago when I was looking to buy mine, prices had gone out of sight because Canon had changed their ink cartridges on their current models. When I was looking, you couldn't get any printer other than the new ones for under $100.

I have absolutely no problem with using a refurbished printer though since many of the companies that sell the systems use refurbished printers themselves.

I wanted the printer that kopykake sells in their complete system package. That one is no longer available though and they were running upwards of $100 on Ebay when you could find them. I did find a refurbished one through Office Max for $49 with free shipping so I was pretty darn happy!

I just did a quick search on Ebay and found only 1 Canon C88. It's a buy it now and is nearly $100.

A little off the subject but all of you that have these edible image printers and stuff can one of you do an edible image for a friend of mine if she pays you? She doesnt want to invest in the whole system yet since its for only one cake. And I really dont get any calls for this kind of thing to invest myself. She needs it for a High School Musical cake.
If any of you will do this, PM me. Thanks!
