I really want to attempt the turkey cake that looks like a real turkey, to take to Thanksgiving dinner at a friend's house, this year. I do not have the lg or mini egg pans and have looked at the few stores we have here that sell pans and they don't have them either. I have asked around to borrow them but no one seems to have them. I can order them online but I doubt they will get to me in time to make this cake for this year. Any suggestions for pans to use in place of the egg pans?? I'm very limited on what shaped pans I have available to me.

Could you make cupcakes, and then just carve them.

Then you'd have scraps to try cake balls!

Stack 9x 13 layers, but that is a lot of carving, you'd probably need 3 layers to get a good sized turkey, I imagine (and a lot of cake balls)

Someone used the oval pans. Just overfill, not too much one of them and it should dome to create the "egg" shape you need. I forgot who did it but I think I saw it in the descriptions of the turkey cakes in the Gallery.

I bought my egg pans on ebay last week. got a brand new large 3-d egg (two halves) for ten plus five for shipping. the small egg cupcake pan for three plus five for shipping. i figure it will save a lot of time and cake scraps. this time of year, you may be able to get them cheaper because people are not thinking easter yet.

hmm - where are the directions for using this lovely egg pan and making a turkey cake? I always thought that would be cool to do too.... be better if I had an airbrush to color it with but it would still be neat to try! I have the small egg pans but not the large one..... but I'd love the instructions if someone has them.... that could be really fun to do!

I made mine using the ovals from the course two kit. If you need a bigger cake you can use a bigger oval. I didn't use the bake even strips and wanted the cake to doom and used that for the shape of the turkey.

I posted my directions in a post a few months ago, let me search and see if I can find it. icon_smile.gif

Thanks everyone!! I do have the oval pans and I have seen the heart pan here recently. I'll have to look for that pan again.
Just because I saw it doesn't mean it's still there. Unfortunately, if you don't buy something the minute you see it, it won't be there when you go back to get it and our cake decorating supply section at the PX is pretty small/limited to begin with.
I did look for pans on ebay but I'm not really worried about the cost, it's getting them to the other side of the world in time for Thanksgiving. icon_lol.gif You just never know. Some stuff comes really fast and other stuff takes the proverbial slow boat to China. Or, Okinawa, I should say. LOL

If you don't have the heart you can cut the drumstick shape out of another shape of cake. I just ended up using a heart because I had one in the freezer and it would mean I didn't have to bake another cake. icon_smile.gif

I wanted the heart pan anyway. This gives me an excuse/reason to buy it, if it is still there. icon_razz.gif
