if it is touching buttercream. I am going to make fence pieces out of royal but I need to stick them into a cake that will be iced in buttercream. They would need to last quite a few hours. So should I have a new game plan or will I be okay using the royal? Thanks!

As long as the royal is completely dry and the buttercream isn't very wet, the pieces should be fine for several hours.

A mreingue buttercream would probably be too wet. A shortening based or crusting buttercream would be better.

you could also make the fences out of piped chocolate.

I put royal icing things on BC all the time. I have never had a problem with them breaking down. Only one time did i notice some small spots on a color flow piece (maybe like grease spots?) But it was still very hard. I think in the classes they freak people out more than necessary about the whole "grease" thing.

I've only had things break down when I've tried to put them on wet. If you let RI dry, it's fine.
