I was wondering how you figure servings on carved cakes. My MIL want s to me to make her a fish for about 30 people. These are just 2 of the cakes she likes:

I'm really clueless how to figure carved cakes. It's hard enough to decide if a 9x13 serves 18, 20, 24, or 25 people! I always make us waaaaaay to much cake!
Any help is greatly appreciated!! TIA
I carved the fish cake in my pics from a 2-layer 9x13 (torted one 2-inch cake). I would say that it served maybe 12. I cut away half of the 9x13 when carving. That's why I made the "tray" under the fish a 10x15 cake, so I would have at least 40 servings. But I always make too much cake, too...
Lately, I have been trying out the 3d cakes I made ahead of time like my wizard of oz glinda cake.
So it just occured to the that the following way might work for me.
Once you bake your 9X13, weigh it. Then once you have carved it out weight it again. See what the difference is. Then you can estimate a little better what you will have.
So if you feel you need more you can adjust.
Good Luck.
