How Bad Does Fondant Really Taste?
Decorating By Daisys_Cakes Updated 31 Aug 2007 , 6:57pm by delta95
Hi!
I am 14 and I was wondering how, bad does fondant really taste?I ask because I am debating whether I want to take Wilton 3 now or whether I want to wait until I go to college and and am interested in starting a cake decorating business. I have heard that it tastes really bad and most people don't eat it but I also heard the same thing about RI and found that it does not taste that bad after it sits on the cake for a day and softens, is fondant the same way? Also does fondant harden or does it stay soft?
BTW does anybody know why certain thread subjects in your "my forum posts" section show up blue and others pink?
Thanks for your help!
Deborah
Oh maybe I should add a poll...let me see if I can figure out how to do one.
Bad fondant tastes bad....good fondant tastes good.
Wilton = Bad
Satin Ice = Good
That's just what I've experienced. I've heard there are other wonderful brands, along with recipes to make your own. ![]()
I'm not quite sure what taking Wilton 3 has to do with fondant. Is that what Wilton 3 is all about, fondant? I'm anti Wilton classes for some reason, so I don't know anything about them.
I decorate my cookies with fondant and it dries hard, but still softer than RI.
Wilton fondant is for sure bad. Try making your own from one of the recipes here at cc. any of those recipes will taste FAR better than wilton and won't cost you an arm and a leg just to try them out. Many of the commercial fondants that are any good are expensive to purchase and need to be ordered and shipped. My local cake shop sells pettinice brand and I didn't love it. My favorite is Michele Fosters Dellicious Fondant recipe found here at CC in the recipe section.
Wilton Fondant belongs on the "Top 5 Nastiest Food products ever mass-marketed"... That stuff is WICKEDLY horrible tasting, smelling.. And it's not as easy to work with as some of the other brands of fondant out there.
Good fondant on the other hand tastes REALLY good. I use Albert Uster (www.auiswiss.com) which is also sold by www.sweetc.com as "Our Best Brand" fondant.. That's the best stuff I've found to work with along with the taste..
I have to agree that Wilton's fondant is NASTY!!! I make my own marshmallow fondant (recipe on CC recipe section), and it is tasty. My friends say it is delicious, and you don't have to "saw" through it to cut the cake. Wilton's fondant is good for practice and for decorations you don't plan to eat. I took the 3rd Wilton course which taught us how to make a tiered fondant covered cake. I have taken 4 courses so far. I would take more, but my school schedule (I'm a teacher) at the beginning of the year is very, very, very busy. My 16 year old daughter took the first three courses with me, and she produced some beautiful cakes. Good luck with your cake decorating.
well, first of all, I'm happy to see a young person taking such an active interest in cake baking. Love that ![]()
and back to the question, yeah Wilton is nasty but if you make your own, it's yummy. I even like to eat chunks of it sometimes
My favorite flavor to put in it is orange and I bet you could make candy by dipping balls of fondant in chocolate or something...mmm
I haven't tried any other brands of fondant, just Wilton so i'm not a good judge of other store-bought brands but the homemade stuff is great and not very expensive either. I use the Toba Garrett fondant recipe that's here on cc: http://www.cakecentral.com/cake_recipe-2127-Toba-Garretts-fondant.html
I've tried marshmallow fondant before too and it's alright but I like scratch fondant better.
Interesting...
so it seems like you guys are saying that Wilton's is digusting and depending on the brand it can be good or bad. I am interested in homemade because if I buy fondant I would have to pay for it (I pay for all my cake decorating supplies other than ingredients like cake mixes, powdered sugar, vanilla etc.) but if I make it from scratch then I won't have to pay for it .
Anyway how much did you guys have to pay for eqiupment for Wilton 3? Also what are you favorite CC homemade recipes ( I know some of you have already mentioned some).
Thanks! ![]()

BTW if you are wondering why I am repleing at 9:30 in the morning it's because I am homeshooled and currently have a break.
Combine some clay, some soap, and some sugar...and I would imagine you'd end up with something that tastes very much like the Wilton fondant. Not that I would know what clay or soap would taste like, but, in other words, the stuff is NOT EDIBLE. The smell of it made me gag when I was in Wilton Course III.
When taking that course, I always made MMF. Now I've experimented with other recipes and have made variations to them to come up with some very yummy fondant. Even people who didn't like fondant have been loving the ones I've been using on my recent cakes.
Check out the Recipes section on this site. Most of them are pretty inexpensive to make, and taste good.
i have yet to find a fondant that i or my family didn't like (including wilton) but i do like satin ice the best. i still use wilton because i can buy it cheaper with coupons in my local craft store but i only use it for making figures that won't be eaten. as for your other question, fondant dries up on the outside and does becaome stiffer but the inside stays soft because it is sealed in with the moisture of the cake and has no air to dry it out. it's not rock hard or anything like that, just stiffer, which is why you can't rework fondant after it has sat ona cake too long and why you need to work quickly with it.
as for you being not being in school, i wouldn't have said anything, my kids don't start again till 9/6, each state is different i guess.
I've only used two kinds of fondant (both homemade). One was from a Collette Peters book years ago. It wasn't awesome and nobody ate it. I have a tendency to blame my inexperience plus my mom froze it for a month (that's another story) so it was dry and crumbly. The other day I tried Rhonda's MMF and it was amazing. Even my aunt (who decides she doesn't like something without tasting it) loved it. That's when I knew it had passed the taste test. Plus it was super easy to make.

Okay I must be the only person who feels that Wilton isn't that bad. I won't say it's totally nasty but I will say it's nothing but pure sugar. If you really enjoy eating sugar, then maybe this is for you. You eat that, you will be on a sugar high for at least 6 hours.
I haven't tried SatinIce I do have Collette Peters recipe and that tasted pretty good. I haven't tried Toba Garrett's recipe but in all honesty, I rather eat buttercream as opposed to fondant. JMO.
Take the Wilton 3 class, it shows you how to roll fondant and make certain fondant flowers and such. It's not bad at all.
Hey hon...the others have already said it all about fondant. I was just gonna answer your blue and pink topics question.
The topic titles are blue once you've opened and read them. They are pink if you haven't read it.
ALso, you can go to college and do cake decorating as your job to help pay your way. What a great way to do that. Then you can take some business classes and stuff so that if you ever open your own cake shop, you understand the business and management side of it. SO, it doesn't have to be one or the other, you can really benefit from both.
Good luck!!
