what are some good frostings for an apple cake?
I know there's carmel. What else? I want a simple buttercream type frosting. Nothing too sweet. No apples on top of the cake because the cake will have to sit out for a few hours, unless that won't make a difference. The cake is for thanksgiving. It has apples and walnuts in it and it was made from a spice cake mix.
martha stewart has a good apple cake recipe and it has a really good icing that goes with it
What about cream cheese or butterscotch?

I did a pumpkin cake with a cream cheese cinamon frosting. I just substituted the water/milk with the coffe creamer that is cinamon (sorry can't remember actual flavor name). It was yummy.
Dulce De Leche Buttercream - recently added some dulce de leche to my standard crusting BC (from this site) which I had flavored with mexican vanilla and it was heavenly. Bought the premade dulce de leche and just kept adding until the flavor was right! Yum!
