Hey I love my cat too much but I have a friend who is always throwing hints that they want me to make them a cake I have made three for them since I started taking my classes during the summer and it seems like she is always throws a hint about how much they like my cakes she will even mention which is their favorites flavors, anyways this friend borrowed some vanilla from me and mentioned their was a small cat hair IN the vanilla!!!!! I of course said I had no clue how it would get in the container and she said no big deal she loves my cat, Well today she was talking about how cute this other cake I made was but remembers that there was cat hair in that one too one tiny hair and she was laughing now I was too horrified to go and ask if she was serious or just playing, but now I am wondering if I should continue to make cakes or not. I love my cat too much I tried to clean as good as I can and I have a small size cat about 8 lbs with short hair and my house gets dusted frequently I don't live like some people who you can see dust hanging off things I barely see some cat hair in my dust when I dust how can it possibly get on cakes I sift everything and clean my counters all the way in fact remove stuff while I'm baking to have all the room how am I still getting hair in there and how embarrassing if this has happened to someone else someone who didn't tell me!!!!! I am offended by my friend because she thinks is funny but if it really bothered her she would not continue to request free cakes, also that is getting old too she has been very nice and generous with us she just gave me a baby shower and gifts for our new baby and we are close but I have a 7 year old, a 2 year old and a 3 week old it is too much to ask me to make you a free cake I wouldn't even do it if anyone paid but I feel bad saying no, and what do I do about the hair??? I am sorry its long

My daughter has a sign in her kitchen that says, "In this house, cat hair is a condiment."

I would just laugh and say "Hey it's free"
I have a dog that shed terrible and I haven't had any complaints yet about dog hair in a cake but I am sure some day it will happen. There are far worse things in our food that comes from the factory's and restaurants to be worried about a stay cat hair. I would say just clean your counters off before decorating.

Good Luck

Anybody who expects you to make free cake for them when you have a brand new baby and other family to take care of deserves worse than cat hair in their food!!!

My cat has lots of very soft hair, and it is even airborne, so I guess if someone finds one from now on I'll just tell them it is a condiment too. I have a couple of things that say "Love me love my cat!" LOL

You probably haven't heard this, but a lady here in Dallas got a salad the other day with a rat in it. I won't tell you where it came from, but a large fast food chain. I'll take a cat hair here and there any day! (Sorry, got carried away!) Janice

Don't worry about it. I've got two dogs so I imagine it's only a matter of time before a stray hair gets where it's not wanted, however hard I try. There's definately worse things, my daughter found a caterpillar in the salad at a wedding, she didn't say anything the bride would have been mortified, and I once got a live spider in my salad on an airplane. Yuck icon_surprised.gif

I know I need rehab bad, because after I pictured a rat in my salad...my next thought was...(you guessed it)....that would be a funny cake in a twisted humor kind of way.

Okay, I'm sorry.... icon_razz.gif Seriously, though, if I ever found roadkill or any wildlife in my salad anywhere, I would never eat out again. Just disgusting!!!

I think it was the Coach of the Dallas Cowboys wife & MIL that found the rat. Totally horrible! Their sueing for a million & something... like they don't have the money already! But fair is fair! Why can't I find a rat in my salads??? LOL~ Just Joking~

We have animals & I'm always worried about hair getting in my cakes. I have never seen any hair in my food so I doubt it will get in the cakes. Hopefully your friend will chill out about the hair. Life goes on it's only hair!

Cakedecor,

I have pets too and the hair thing is a big concern for me too. I am as careful as can be and have not had anyone tell me they found a hair, so far.

What I would do with your friend when she mentions you making another cake is just say that you wouldn't feel comfortable doing it since there is no guarantee that she won't find another hair. Plus, I think she is taking advantage of you, especially since you have 3 small children and you are making cakes for her for free!! She should at least pay for your supplies. That is my opinion.

I am not an animal person so if I found something like that I would be horrified. I think you are doing the right thing by cleaning all the time. Maybe if it is possible to put the cat in another room before you clean the kitchen when you are making a cake. I agree that your friend is taking advantage of you. You should tell her that you how you feel about the free cakes and her comment on the cat hair. If she was a true friend she would have told you about the hair and not made jokes. Good luck with the cakes and the new baby.

I would not worry too much. Even transporting cakes, a speck of something could get on the cake/in the box. It sounds as if you are taking measures to keep everything as clean as possible. There is nothing more you can do. I live with my two cats. I am constantly cleaning but even taking all the precautionary measures, it is no guarantee.

It does sound as if your friend is taking advantage of you. Cakes are a lot of work. Your time is valuable. And your the Mom of a three week old, with two other children? She should be making you dessert!

you are funny!!!
Everyone here is right, I have never found human hair on my food, I do all I can to clean as much I even use a hair net but unless I dig in the cake myself I won't even know my self for sure that there is no hair I try as much as I can even put cat locked up in DD's room, but I guess some of it sneaked up it seems like a lot that she found hair twice, yes I do think she is started to think of me as a friend with benefits, free unlimited cakes with friendship I don't sell cakes I will do them for family and as a once in a while favors but she seems like she will be calling every week for a free cake for the weekend I think if she asks again I will tell her how difficult it was last time I made a cake with my kids and all, and say I would love to but just can't find the time.

You're thinking way too nice for this person, tell her you are so busy with the new baby, your other two kids, trying to take care of the house, maybe she could/should make a cake for you!

Some people just have more nerve than sense!

I don't sell cakes either, but most of the family donate the 'makings',and I give them my time. Right now, you really HAVE no time...
