Hi good folks,

Can someone give me some tips as to forming basic gumpaste leaves? I live in a very moist climate and my local cake decorating store tells me to use a mixture of water and tylose to adhere the wire to the back of a leaf, rather than "mashing" in the wire.

Does anyone have any good tips to have good leaves come out? Also if anyone has some good links to gumpaste sites that would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Lisa

Hi Lisa,
First - make sure you have a good gumpaste recipe - I recommend Nicolas Lodge's on this site. I also live in a humid area, and have found his recipe to withstand the most humid of days. Needless to say, it does get so bad that I end up putting my leaves in the light-box - or oven with the light on - to ensure it stays dry.
I use just a little water on my wire, and insert into the gumpaste - after cutting out the shape, then balltool the edge to thin and curve randomly. I also sometimes make a 'sausage' and insert the wire up the middle (2/3 of the way) then roll the sausage flat, and cut with a wheel freehand, to the shape I would like my leaf. This allows me to make really large, long, wide etc. without the need for a cutter. Balltool edges as usual, vein or score accordingly....and allow to dry in lightbox or oven under the light. Colour as desired. Play around a bit and I am sure you will get the hang of it...
