not sure what i would pay for a cake like that, but it is obvious that you put alot of hard work into your cakes, and i would think that you could charge more. loved all the cakes you have there and you definately have tons of talent.

You do wonderful work! I remember seeing the horse in the box a while back and thinking that it was absolutely adorable. However, I'm horrible with figuring out what to charge too so unfortunately I can't help you very much!

But, as it's been said to me (many times lol), don't undersell yourself! You definitely have a talent. Don't let people take advantage of it!

Button-moon,

Your cakes are awesome!! They are all so cute!! I especially like the bird nest cake! You definetly need to charge more!! I have been decorating cakes for 20 years and I have a hard time charging what I should for them!! You are young, get what they are worth now so you aren't doing them for nothing later!!

Again, awesome work!!

o.k. first off I so know what you mean it is so hard to know what is appropriate to charge.

however in my most HO your cakes are way more than you r average run of the mill cakes -you have some serious talent there and I think that twice that price would be a deal !!

I just looked at your pics and yr cooks are georgously cute. I think you should charge more however I would also check around your area and see whats available and whats being charged. It's hard to say when we live in different countries with the dif in cost of living and all that. If you are the only one doing these masterpieces then yes definatley charge more.

You need to charge more for your cakes you do awesome work if your to shy to ask you should type up a price list with the picture in a notebook and when asked just show them the book with all your info and if they request a cake that you haven't made and want to draw it out for you or they want a special design charge a little more because it would be considered a custom cake and put that in your price list that the cost is a little more for their own design so when some ask about the cost just show them your info you don't have to say anything and if they like your work they will order. Good Luck! icon_biggrin.gif

your cakes are incredible! You are not charging enough. I struggle with this as well, in fact DH and I had a big argument a few months ago about it and what he said made alot of sense (as much as I don't want to admit it, haha). He said that my cakes are not just cake, they are a work of art. If customers just want cake they would go to the grocery store or walmart. You put a lot of time and effort to make each cake special and unique for your customers and what they are paying for is your skill. They are paying for a cake made specifically for them by you who took the time to get to know exactly what they wanted and then you did it. DO NOT SELL YOURSELF SHORT!! I started charging more after that, (still not enough though according to DH) and my customers have not batted an eye. I don't know what to tell you to charge for a cake like your horse cake, but definitely more than $28

Your cakes are great! Here is a site in London who offers comparable cakes to yours, maybe you can check out their prices and raise yours accordingly..

You are charging too little. I'm UK based as well. If I had made the horse cake I would charge at least £40 if the board were decorated as well. Your Oscar cake - £60. I charge no less than £80 for any of my cakes. Be confident and just say how much they are, if people think it's too much then don't reduce your price EVER - you'll soon get customers who appreciate your work. it's a cliche - but people will only value the work if you do too.

For a cake like Oscar I would charge at least $75.00 if not more because of all the work let me give you a tip go and stand around a bakery and watch people come in and pick up birthday cakes see how much they pay for a plain flat sheet cake that should give you ideas on how much to charge believe me I did one day I was their at a local bakery/supply store and had to wait for somethings and could not believe the cost of these plain cakes that people were picking up I thought my gosh how much did she just pay for that. icon_surprised.gif

I start at $50 US for a fairly plain 9x12 (borders and writing, torted and filled). you definitely need to charge more.

Hey, now hold on a second! icon_biggrin.gif

Your Oscar cake looks every bit as good as the stuff they have.

I would personally charge around $4/serving (just over L3) for your Oscar cake. At least! Because your cake sounds really good inside, as well. If you want to go to my website and look at the 3D stuff maybe my prices will help? I had trouble pricing too but then I decided I HAVE to make a profit or it won't be fun anymore, since I have three little boys and a p/t job as well... I have to make this worth my while.

You are so right emmascakes, but I must admit I too have a problem with pricing cakes, feel very nervous on what to charge, icon_redface.gif but I have just returned to doing cakes so perhaps my confidence will grow on that one.

I agree with what darcat says......every area is different for pricing. What I do is check around at other specialty bakeries to see what they would charge for something comparable.

If you haven't been doing cakes very long (as I haven't either).....it is hard to "put your foot down" and charge what is reasonable (I think anyway). What I am finding is that once you get more self-confidence and start to BELIEVE that you DESERVE more for your cakes you will start asking for more. Try and find a way that you can get some of the prices down in writing. Make a price sheet with the prices that you believe are appropriate (which is probably more than you are charging). It is easier to show someone a price list than to have to tell them verbally. Give yourself a good "talking to" and remind yourself that you are WORTHY of making good money on your cakes as you put alot of money, time and effort into your work.

Good luck !!!

I think you are under charging, but I don't know your area, or how big those cakes are.

As for me, I'd kill to know how you made that Mr Potato Head cake. I tried to do an egg and couldn't get the stupid thing to stand upright. How did you do that??
