I've been asked to paint flowers (a kind of rose looking flower) on fondant for a wedding cake. I practiced last night (sorry don't have a pic because I gave the dummy cake the gal to see what she would think), but anyway, here's my problems:

1. I used Americolor and Wilton gels with some pearl dust to enhance. Is this okay? I was told by a cake shop owner that it wasn't a good idea because it could become flawed before the wedding.

2. She wants the flowers to be a satiny/silk color (to imitate a design on a dress) -- WHAT DO I USE? icon_cry.gif I tried ivory, but it was tooooo brown. The cake shop owner said I should try oyster luster dust and that it would be the better thing to paint with.

Any ideas or experience would be most appreciated. icon_smile.gif

Hmm, i'm not sure, but someone on CC (maybe ShirleyW?) steams their gp flowers after painting with lustre dust to set the color - maybe it'll work for the cake too?

I think if you thinned a very little bit of the ivory gel w/ vodka or lemon extract, you'd get a lighter color?

Are you talking about painting them directly on the cake? If so, don't use AmeriColor. No reason to do that. Just use petal or luster dust, which ever give you the effect you want. (Petal dust leaves a mat finish, luster dust will give you a sheen). Use lemon extract and just mix the dust in. It will last forever and I've never had it fade. I painted this cake (which I hate) and had no problem with the color.

If you are making GP flowers, yes steam them after you apply the dust. Good luck.

I like Crystal Colors petal dust (CK sells it online). The black & white cake in my pics is painted using that with a few drops of vodka. It is hard to tell in the pics, but the finished effect was very satiny - almost looked like fabric after it dried. This brand is very true to color - what the dust looks like in the jar is what it will look like on your cake. The colors on the cake held up fine. We had leftover cake for a few days & the color looked just as good on day 3 as it did when I first made it.

I should clarify - the black on that cake is Crystal Colors. The pearl is just super pearl luster dust.

THanks everyone! I really like how you all used your super pearl -- that's what I tried to use, but I just didn't get it to look like that! Maybe I wasn't mixing it right with the vodka?

The flowers I'm trying to do need to be either the pearl color or the oyster, I think -- but how can I get a shading effect with them? Is this just a case of use wet dust for darker lines and the actual powder for shading?

I"m going to try a practice again tonight with the pearl and a red. I didn't know that you can use petal dust with vodka -- can you?

TIA - S.

I get shading by applying dry dust, one color on top of another.

Thanks again everyone! Here's what I came up with so far on my second attempt -- I know they're not spectacular, but I'm hoping that I'm on the right track! It's amazing how many little flaws show up in the picture that I can't see in real life.

Anyway, what do you think? I may post these separately to get some opinions too. This is my first attempt (2nd try) with painting anything like this. They are mimicking the patternt that is painted on the bride's dress. Please forgive the awful picture quality!

Thanks for any input.
