I'm trying Toba Garrett's fondant, and I have a terrible sticky mess !! I used it once before without a problem, but not so today ! I'm in Ohio, and you probably already know about all the flooding and therefore humidity that we are having.... could THAT be it ? OR....... this time instead of adding clear gelatin, I used strawberry..... ( YUMMY TASTE! ), do you think THAT could be the problem ?

I'm not sure but I'd have to say your substituting the clear gelatin with the strawberry could be your culprit. I've made Toba's recipe numerous times without fail. It always works terrific, but I follow the recipe to the letter . Intersting.....The humidity may not be helping either.

could you use the clear gelatin and the strawberry lorainne oil or the strawberry extract to get the same strawberry taste without effecting the consistancy?

I know it's just a guessing game, but I wouldn't think the color and flavor added to the strawberry gelatin would be the cause of your problem. I would imagine you just need to knead more powdered sugar into it. My bet is on the humidity.

I'd say it's a little of both. The extra sugar in the gelatin you used changes the mix, and then add to that humidity...not good for preventing unwanted stickiness.

If you want to try and "stiffen" it up, try adding a little cornstarch to it, knead it in well, and be sure to use some shortening on your hands as you go.

Other than that, I think it may be a do-over for you. Good Luck!

Well, I'm making it for a "CARS" cake, and I thought the red in the strawberry would make it a brighter red.... it did that, and the taste is REALLY good....... I'll try the cornstarch and see what happens..... you could be right about the do over though........DARN IT !!

Quite a few of my cake students have added unsweetened Kool-Aid mix to their fondant to acheive the desired color and flavor.

Both! icon_smile.gif The red Kool-Aid was fruit punch, and it was really yummy!

Those who added it to pre-made fondant used Wilton's fondant, which actually made it taste pretty good (haha, which is a miracle in and of itself!). Adding it to a good recipe, like Toba's, is REALLY yummy.
