I posted my most recent picture last night and I think it definitely belongs in the Disaster forum. This was my first attempt at a puzzle cake and I did not have fun. All but 1 layer is a styrofoam dummy as they had a dessert buffet from their caterer.

The MMF did not want to work for me. Maybe it was the humidity because I have been so happy with the MMF since I found out about it. I carved them, sprayed them and started covering. The fondant kept tearing along the top and puckering big time along the bottom. For the life of me I could not get a smooth covering. This was really terrible. I think the pictures show it pretty well but the worst of it at the the back of course which you can't see. It really just did not turn out the way it was supposed to.

I retrieved the dummy after the reception because I was going to use the dummy as a display cake but I will not be doing that. I am going to be soaking the fondant off and then recovering and re-decorating. I didn't like the way the piping turned out either. I know we are our own worse critics but I'm usually not this displeased. I almost hate to hear from the bride on this one because of the terrible fondant puckering!! Anyway - Thanks for listening - sometimes I just need to express myself...lol

Hi Tammi, the cake looks great in the picture. I'm sure you are seeing flaws that no-one else will. I haven't tried one of those but I'm sure I'd be ripping my hair out well before I was done.

I had a problem this week with fondant. A brand that I NEVER have trouble with. I think it was the humidity. I didn't want to add gumpaste because they were going to eat it. icon_razz.gif

Which MMF receipe do you use? I've only tried one. It was from the cookie decorating videos that you buy online and I didn't have good luck with it. It cracked after it dried. Tasted good and there was another cake on top, but still. I was disappointed.

What an interesting design! thumbs_up.gif Lorrie

Yep, I think you're being WAY too hard on yourself. It's very pretty and the scroll work is quite unique. I can't imagine the bride would notice the puckering...it's just not something that non cake decorators seem to notice at all (at least in my limited experience!).

By the way, my husband just caught a glimpse of the pic out of the corner of his eye and said "wow". So I showed it to him and he said "wow, that's cool"...etc. He loved it and said that he thinks the puckering is noticable BUT no big deal at all because the cake is so cool. And he also agreed that he wouldn't have noticed the puckering at all without having lived with me.

I repeat...too hard on yourself!

Tammi-

I agree, we are our own worst critics. I really think the cake turned out beautiful. If you hadn't mentioned the puckering, I wouldnt' have noticed it...and I have "the cake eye"...so I'm SURE the guests probably didn't notice it either. I know how it feels to have your project NOT work for you, but I think you did a great job and I am sure the bride won't be upset with you. icon_smile.gif

I'm in agreement with everyone else - you are being too hard on yourself!

Your cake looks beautiful! I doubt anyone noticed the puckering. I think we are our own worst critics, because when other people look at our cakes - they usually think they're great! We just know where all the problem areas are!!!!!

This cake is really cool. I agree with all the above. Nobody sees that stuff but us and it's because we look at it all the time. It's very unique!

Thanks everyone - It does help for fellow cake decorators to know what I'm going through! I used the Marshmallow Fondant Recipe on here - It's just 16 oz of mini-marshmallows & 2 lbs sugar, 2 tablespoons water & 2 teaspoons vanilla. Very easy and I've used it many times with no trouble at all.

Maybe it was the humidity. It's hasn't been too bad this last week but then yesterday it was 100 degrees & 100% humidity - we had the WORST thunderstorms last night because of the weather. We were lucky of course because I woke up to the news this morning and apparently there were some very severe storms for others and many are without power so I shouldn't complain!!

Thanks again everyone!

Tammi
