How do you make single dots symmetrical on a cake like in a diamond shaped design? I'm amazed at the work I've seen on the cakes on this site. Any and all feedback is very much appreciated.

There are various tools out there for this - personally, I use triangle rulers. They're always at 45-degrees and so I lay the flat edge down and follow the angled edge - makes it easy.

Thanks for asking this Beverlyanne ~ I was wondering that too... and thanks kp for the answer ~ that makes sense!

And since we're on the dot topic ~ how do you avoid leaving little points on your dots? Some people seem to really have a knack for keeping them smooth.

My Wilton instructor taught us to pipe the dot, stop pressure and make a little "c" shaped movement to pull the tip away. If it's still a little pointy just smooth it with a damp paintbrush.

I dip my finger in powdered sugar and tap the tip down...... a little trick I learned from my fellow CC'ers!

A finger dipped in cornstarch works too-- and either that or PS absorbs into any color pretty well.-- from the directions from the Spiderman Wilton cake pan.
