I made some very good choc BC-esque icing...the recipe called for making choc ganache and then when that was cool, it was beaten up with butter and cream cheese..it tasted awesome!!!!...a little tricky to smooth but it was so dark and chocolatey..
If you want the recipe give me a shout..
It came from the cookbook Eat Shrink and be Merry (the only high fat recipe in the book...because you only live once..hahaha)

I usually add the premelted pkgs. of chocolate from Nestle's (I think). You do not get the gritty/powdery taste of the cocoa powder.

I have also made regular buttercream and mixed in a batch of cooled ganache. Really yummy.

My chocolate BC is really simple and very, very good. I use my regular BC icing (1/2 crisco and 1/2 real butter). I simply add cocoa powder until it is a chocolatey as I'd like. It's wonderful, and my customers love it.

Use a good quality chocolate. Find one you really like and use it in your bc.

I am right there with you. I hated the powdery, gritty taste and texture that adding the coco powder gave me..... I talked to my cake store supply lady and she told me to try adding a can of already made choc icing to my regular BC. It worked great!!! Was a big hit with everyone.
