Ok i am stuck this is the first time in a long time. Here is the story:
I have been ask by the retiree to make her retirement cake. She told me the following, the type of cake, for 80 people, she is retiring from the army as a lt col. in the medical area. She is a office worker.

These are the things i know about her hobbies: she does jewelry making works with glass to make beads, she is learning about polymer clay, and she does dry flower arrangements. She has grandchildren, and one son.

The cake is needed for 28 th of sept.

When talking with her, she talked about a dirty cake....but than said no that here mother would be there. LOL So i kind of got the impression that she wanted something funny. So i have decided to make her a private cake (a small one) with a naked gi joe made to look more manly>
with him posed on satin sheets. This will be just for her eyes. LOL

So now i am not sure what to do for the main presentation cake.

For this one i thought of making the symbol for the medical community.
her rank symbol, and the symbol for the branch of the military she is in.

But than i also thought of making a cardboard box with the words donations and have a uniform and boots hanging over the edge. a pair of fuzzy slippers and some of her craft things hanging around..

Ok so i have some ideas but i just can't get them together. So if anyone can help. Please......

It sounds like you have come up with great ideas on your own!! As a mother of a MCJROTC cadet, I know that the military rank and symbol is almost worshipped by ALL of the squad. I married an Army man and he still values the symbol and the soldiers as if he were there.

I think the symbol or rank should be a part of the cake because she is celebrating her retirement from the army. Beyond that, it would be great to include some of the things she loves as a hobby or some kind of theme like "from soldier to civilian" including the things she loves to do.

I don't know if this is any help at all-guess I'm thinking out loud with you. icon_redface.gif

Ya i was thinking maybe a bridge connecting two cakes with the boots to start the crossing and a pair of fuzzy slippers to on the other side. Thanks for thinking out loud with me. thumbs_up.gif

How about sculpting a sheet cake into the medical symbol and covering it with fondant and then placing things on and around it that are fun and in line with what she's told you? I've done some military retirement cakes and as much as they want it to be fun, it's still a very solemn and serious ceremony, and a major milestone in a persons life. I love your idea of the private cake! That's very nice of you and I bet she'll love it. Good luck and be sure to post your cake so we can see what you came up with.
