Can I use any food safe mold for fondant? I have seen molds made specifically for fondant / gumpaste and I have seen ones for chocolates or other candies (and even some for cookies) and just want to be sure that I can pretty much use any of these with fondant. I didn't know if there was an issue with how thick the molds might be or if they're made somewhat different . . . can anyone advise me? The only thing I do know is that I'm not supposed to get the polymer clay or soap molds because they're not food safe but the rest are a mystery to me! And, do any of you have pictures of cakes where you've used molds for your fondant?

Thanks!
Carol

As long as it is food safe it should work fine.

you might want to make sure that it will be easy to pop your fondant out of the mold. some of the food molds I've seen are a rigid plastic.

Brown Bag cookie molds are safe to use with fondant; they put out a small "ideas" book, that shows all of the different things you can use the molds for, with directions, and fondant is included.

thank you! I didn't know if fondant molds were thinner than ones you'd use for chocolate or something else. Still new to this fondant (MMF) thing and gathering info. as I go!

Silcone molds work great with fondant because you can bend the mold to get the fondant out. But you can still use hard plastic molds with fondant. Just make sure you dust it with cornstratch. I've out it in the freezer until it was hard and then used something in the back to pull it out of the mold. You can also let it sit in the mold for a while to dry a bit and then remove it.

Hi Carol,
I use both types of moulds for my cakes and you can see on my website Novelty Cakes "Baby Blue" and Wedding Cakes "Maria" that I have used the plastic moulds. If you buy them from Cake supplies they will be food safe. I buy many moulds but as yet some I haven't used. But that is me I see something and must have it and there is a lot of equipment I haven't used but sure I will in the future. You could say I have a Cake Decorating equipment fetish.

Briarview,

Your cakes are beautiful! I love Maria's cake . . . and all of the others! Thanks for the examples!

I have a cake decorating fetish, too. I buy way more than I have had a chance to use yet but I can't help myself. And I WILL use it all at some point!

Are these the same as impression molds? I found this at www.cakesbysam.com and am thinking about it, but am unsure how they work. Anyone know?

I didn't know that soap and clay molds couldn't be used for fondant.

tinascakes - from what I have read here, they're not necessarily made from food safe materials so while the chances of it causing any type of problem are rare, it's still not ideal. I think there are a lot of people on this site that do use them . . . but there are also people here who just recommend only going the food-safe route just to be cautious.
