I was late to a meeting at church for planning a banquet. I caught the very end and everyone reviewed what they were going to do. Everything was mentioned except dessert. I spoke up and said I would bring a cake. Everyone was delighted. I reminded them that I was no pro but I would do my best. I was thinking in my head 50-60 people. Just to make sure I ask how many servings were going to be needed. They said 200...I know my eyes bugged out of my head for a minute. I said "WHAT 200 YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!! THERE IS NO POSSIBLE WAY I CAN DO A CAKE THAT BIG. WHAT IF I MESS UP 200 PEOPLE WILL SEE THE DISASTER.!! Actually I said that on the inside. On the outside I smiled and said "No Problem". Guess I learned a good lesson. Dont be late and ask first! I have a couple of weeks to get my thoughts and nerves together. Anyone have any good ideas for me since Im a beginner?

Wow......I would personally stay away from stacked/tiered cakes...I would say several half sheet cakes that way people could have different kinds of cake and you could try different decorating techniques. And its easy to cut and serve.

shebellas has a great idea. This will probably be the least stressful for you.

You could also consider asking for some money to help cover the cost. You could mention that you didn't realized the amount required when you volunteered and that size is quite a bit more than expected.

Best of luck to you.

Im not to worried about the cost. I just want something to turn out nice. I have not baked anything but round cakes. Are the sheet cakes hard to take ot of the pan and cool without breaking?

Nah, they're easy. Just make sure your cooling racks are bigger than the cake pan. You should have no problems.

If you're more comfortable with rounds you could do those...just do several of them, obviously and decorate each one...

I did a half sheet cake tonight...you can read about my drama over in "cake disasters" titled "I HATE CHOCOLATE CAKE"...so I think sometimes sheet cakes are a little more involved when it comes to cooling and decorating because you do have more space to fill but, in the end they are worth it...

I'm uploading pics of my finished sheet cake which was almost a disaster...check out my photos

You didn't mention if there was a theme to this banquet? That usually helps my creative juices churning

LOL ROFL don't mean to laugh but as I don't make cakes even as good as you I would be bowled over internally and go NP as well.

I looked at your cake pictures and I think you will be just fine. I don't mind doing sheets cakes. It gives me more room to work with. Do whatever makes you feel comfortable. you are always your worst critic. i agree if there is a theme work with that and design cakes that would go with it. You can do it!!!!

I personally do not like sheet cakes..............and if you have only done round, stick with what you are comfortable with. I too looked at your pics........your stacked cake for the 13 year old looks great........you could easily do one for 200........or, like someone else suggested a bunch of round cakes.........you could use cake stands if you have them..........

You guys have some good ideas. I think I will do several rounds in different flavors. I will have to see how many I will need to make. I could probably do 2 -14 inch and 3-10 inch. Thanks again! Tina
