I am a bit confused on this. I went to Payless and checked it out, it says the jars are 2 Grams, not ounces. And you paid $3.98 for 4 grams total, right?

Here are the same dusts at Global Sugar Arts for $2.99 for 4 grams.

Can someone give me a link to a photo that gives an example of what I would use the luster dusts on...I haven't had an opportunity to use them yet.
Thanks,
Toni

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but in answer to your question. Nearly all gumpaste flowers are painted with dry petal dusts, many gumpaste or fondant bows are highlighted with luster or pearl dusts, and they can be thinned with alcohol such as Everclear and used for painting details on gumpaste, such as facial features, or for printing or writing a message on gumpaste. Here is a link to a gumpaste cup and saucer I painted with gold dust thinned with Everclear. The Violets are gumpaste and dusted with Royal Purple petal dust.

Tomoore, in my photos the pic of the sqaure quilted cake with the gold diamond shapes... the gold is luster dust. Also trimming the ribbon.

I received my new luster dusts (15 more colors!!) and the day they came I giggled like a school girl. I LOVE the super pearl, I used it on my fish cake to give it that shiny fishy look and I adore it. It looked even better in person as they always do!

OK- Because I keep seeing so much about luster dust, last week I ordered each color. I got them in the mail Friday and I just have to say....

Now what???? icon_redface.gif

I was so excited to order them, I did not think about that fact that I do not know how to use it!!!!
I did try some on chocolate leaves I made but not sure I was doing it correctly.
Well, at least I have them, now all I have to do is keep playing with them!
Oh, and , is it me or are these little jars hard to open??? I could not get the lid off!

Once you start using you will never stop! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif Just play around with them a bit. Brush them on dry on fondant and gumpaste or mix it the dusts with a clear extract or vodka, gin or everclear and paint them on--dry and wet give you different affects--even with the same color. You can also paint with them on BC icing too.

As for opening them, I use a bottle opener--works perfectly. Much better than my teeth... icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Could someone do a side-by-side comparison for the different dusts for us new at this? Luster, shimmer, petal, etc?

Are there any whites that will turn out white used as snow on green fondant trees?

Here is a good definition of all the dusts: http://sdbytracy.com/dusts.htm. As far as white turning up white on geen, I don't think it will, but then I guess I have never tried. Me personally, I would probably use royal icing for snow and then brush that with a pearl dust to make it shiny.

Kylie,
Where do you order your luster dust from. I had a look at the CakeDeco website http://www.cakedeco.com.au/product.asp?productID=99
and their site sells luster dust for $5.90 for 40grams jar.
Does this sound correct to you or do you think there is a typing error on the site. The ones in America seem to be 2 gram or 4 gram jars.
What size jars do you get?

Barbara
