If you've seen any of my other posts lately you'll know I've been having problems w/my ovens thermostat. I bought an oven thermometer so that I can make sure to bake at the correct temperature but then I realized that having the ability to monitor the internal oven temp isn't necessarily a good thing.

When you put your cakes in the oven, the temp will normally drop, right? Because the cake batter isn't 350 degrees, so as they heat up the oven will temporarily drop as heat is exchanged?? Yes? If so, how much does it drop and for how long. The reason I'm asking is because when I am watching it drop on my oven thermometer I'm thinking "uh oh, I adjusted the temp too low, it's dropping" so I want to turn it back up to make sure it returns to the set temp. How long should I wait before fiddling with the dial?

OK I know the real answer here is to get my oven fixed! But in the meantime how does one monitor the oven temp without OVERwatching it??

Am I making any sense??

If you preheat your oven and it maintains a steady temperature for a while, without opening the door, I think it would be safe to say don't adjust the temp after putting the cake in.

However, if it does not hold a temperature (once it has pre-heated) you won't be able to rely on any temp with or without adjustments.
