How Tall Are Your Wedding Cake Tiers?

I am making my first wedding cake for my niece, and I wonder what the average height is for your tiers? I usually tort two cakes, so there are four layers. Is this too tall? Thanks for opinions and help.

The 'typical' cake is about 4". Two layers, torted and filled, usually makes it around 4".

I just made my first one and I had 2 2" layers of cake in each tier, then plus filling, icing and the cake board, they were probably close to 5". Personally, I like that look and I think it looks more "professional" and less "home baker" when the tiers are on the tall side.

Every one that I have made ended up with each tier being 2 layers and 4.5 to 5 inches in height. I don't think you would want them to be any higher. icon_wink.gif

I agree that a taller cake looks more professional. The cake itself is about 4" when I do it but after adding in three layers of filling and one layer of frosting, that adds in at least another 1/2 inch or so.

It all depends on the look you're trying for though. There are 3" cake pans out there also and those won't be as tall when finished as 2 2" pans are. I've seen cakes that have one tier be twice as tall as the rest or other cakes that are only 2" in a tier.
