For the first time tomorrow I will be baking a jelly roll cake in order to make a crayon! I hope it is not too hard to make the jelly roll cake. I AM BITING MY NAILS!!!!
I hope someone has a better idea or have made a jelly roll cake before please tell me it is EASY!!!!
Thank you,

line the pan with parchment so you can easily remove the cake while it is still warm. While it is still warm, roll the cake using the paper or a tea towell. When it is cool, open it carefully to spread the jam and re-roll it.
If all else fails, there is a fall back position. cut the cake in strips (3-4) stack them with jelly filling, then trim the stack so it is rounded.
This has worked fairly well for me when the cake broke.
Well thanks so much. I will put buttercream icing instead of jelly. I hope that will do. I hope its so good to eat too. Yummy! ![]()
Forgot to ask... when you line the parchment paper do you add like flour or nothing just paper on it and put the batter in it right? ![]()
Ill try... never made Jelly Roll cake. Wish it was just regular cake but figured it would break and not be able to roll it and I will be using Icing instead of Jelly.
I hope its good that way.
I better stick with the jelly roll and put bc icing. I hope it will turn out ok.
What you think?
I read this topic and thought I would share my recipe for jelly roll. It is very easy to make. Here it is:
1 1/2 c all purpose flour (you can also use Bisquick for this)
1 c sugar
1 tsp vanilla
5 eggs (separated)
1 stick butter or margarine
Beat egg whites until fluffy. Add flour and sugar slowly. Then add the yolks, vanilla and butter. Pour onto jelly roll pan and bake for approx. 15 min. at 450 degrees. While it is still roll it up with a wet kitchen towel sprinkled with sugar. Leave it like that for a few min. Unroll fill and roll again. I use this to make a jelly roll with "dulce de leche" filling and spread it on top as well sprinkled with pecans. It is so good.
I hope this helps
Thank you and I appreciate your time to help me. Well actually I am making a crayon and I will use bc filling. I hope it will work.
Do you think so if i use your recipe and by the way how much of this batter will cover what size pan?
Hi Pink Lady, when I made my first jelly roll type cake years ago I too was very nervous about turning out the cake onto the towel. I spritz the bottom of the jellyroll pan with some baking spray, then line with either parchment or wax paper, grease and flour. This cake bakes fast, usually 12-15 min. so watch carefully. sprinkle your tea towel generously with powdered sugar, (this is how I do it...take cake from oven, lay ps side of towel down on top of cake, place cooling rack on top of towel then invert onto rack, peel off paper....then roll cake and towel together into a roll, let cool on rack, then unroll , spread with your filling and re-roll. I would cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to do your thing as refrigeration helps cake become more stable. There may be others out there that can give you better tips than I, but this has always worked for me. Good luck.
What hellieOh said about the cooking time is true. this cake bakes really fast and if you let it bake longer it will crust or harden and it will be harder to roll and it will break when rolling. the wet towel sprinkled with sugar works really well for me. To date none of my rolls have broken.
I learned that when making my pumpkin roll, it is best to spray the towel with a little water. The recipe says to use a damp cloth, but it gets the cloth too wet when you try to do this. Just spray it with a little water. Then dust the cake itself while still in the pan with powdered sugar - don't be too generous or the powdered sugar will react with the water on the towel and form a crust. Then just turn the cake out onto the towel and immediately roll. You MUST do all of this while the cake is still warm. I have done this for all my jelly rolls and have never had one mess up. Good luck!
Just wanted to add, if you need a good recipe for jellroll, I am posting this link as this is similar to how I make mine (beaten egg whites).
