I had decided that if I was going to sell cakes, I could only do it on weekends, because I'm a full-time graduate student, I work as a teaching assistant part-time, and I also tutor. I've gotten a couple of orders so far, and everything has been going fine. School just started this week and my sweet MIL who had been talking up my cakes to her office asked me if I would do an Elvis cake for one of her coworker's 50th birthday. Even though the party was on a weeknight (Thursday), I agreed to do it. I thought it would be no big deal, even made a practice cake that I was quite pleased with in no time flat. I got home from school tonight at 8:30, and had baked my cake and made the icing yesterday, so I thought it would be a cinch....I think the Cake Gods love to hear that...My first FBCT of Elvis came out just fine. I figured I was pretty much done and watched some television with my DH, talked to a few friends, etc. It was 1 am and I was about to go to bed, when I noticed that Elvis was horribly sweating! I hadn't waited for the cake to thaw before I decorated it and beads of water were pooling all over it. Black was running into the white jumpsuit. It looked horrible. I tried to save him, but to no avail.
I calmly made another FBCT (of course, I had to make more icing because I never make enough). It didn't freeze all the way and his whole face stuck to the wax paper. Now it's 4 am, and I am crying uncontrollably in the kitchen. I'm out of wax paper, cocoa, and my mind. I finally got ahold of myself and scraped the whole damn cake. I guess I'm just not going to get any sleep tonight...
I think I'm done with selling cakes. The stress is not worth it, and they always, ALWAYS come out better when I'm not insane. Last time I sold a cake I ground my teeth so hard I think I displaced my jaw.
Oh no
I'm sorry you had such a rough go at it... Wish I could make those supplies appear for ya and make it all work out. Your practice cake looks great and I hope you had success with completing this one.
BTW I had seen those bikini cookies you did the other day and they are so cute!
I took a peek at your elvis cake in your photos and you did an AMAZING job!!! Don't give up selling your cakes, you have some great talent and your transfer was really great!!!!! As you get more comfortable with your decorating your stress will ease up, same thing happened to me!!!!
Good Luck!
That elvis cake in your pics looks great! You didn't even have to make a border around him to cover up mistakes!! He's perfect. Anyway, you sound like me w/ every cake that I do! My DH tells my kids to stay far away from me when I am decorating! LOL! Once you collect your mind, I am sure it is going to turn out just as perfect as the other one! BTW, I used to be a teachers aide and a sub and cakes are definitely more challenging!! ![]()
It's your cakes way of telling you that "Elvis has left the building." These things take on personalities of their own, and this cake was giving you attitude. Your doing a great job, don't get too frustrated, just take a step back, come back and conquer it!!!!!!!!!! That's what I have to do with almost every cake I do. I get 1/2 done and have to get away from it because I literally start cussing it out. Kind of funny, because I'm not a cusser, only when I do things that are supposed to be fun for me. Weird...
Chin up, you do great work. ![]()
Thank you all so much for your kind words of encouragement. I finally got the cake done around 6:00 am and managed to get a few hours of sleep before I had to go to school. My DH is such a sweetheart and delivered it for me even though he hardly got any more sleep than I did (it's hard to sleep with someone cussing and grumbling!). And I managed to stay awake during the entire three hour class I had today! The cake didn't turn out as well as I would have liked, but I think it was okay and everyone at my MIL's office was very nice about it and said they really liked it. I think I will keep selling a few cakes, but just not ANY that are due on school days!!
Here's the finished product- the picture actually looks better than the cake did-the FBCT of Elvis wasn't the same thickness and his face was lower than the rest of his body. ![]()
Sell or don't sell - you know what is best for you. I had to make the same decisions when I was in school.
But your Elvis is really cool.
