Here's my first cake topper after purchasing the 2nd tutorial from Icing on the Cake's Lorraine McKay (aka aine2). I highly recommend it. I still need to work on the hands and feet but I'm very happy with it. Finished cake to come on Saturday. Thanks Lorraine!

I found that once you do a couple of characters using her tutorials, overall modeling skills improve...I also highly recommend it!!

I hope you don't mind me gatecrashing your post, but I wanted to second what you said about Aine2's tutorials.
Here's a picture of the cake I've just complete. I just CANNOT get to grips with hands or feet. And my biggest problem is hair. Grrrrr! I can't do hair.
These models are supposed to be a 6 year old girl and boy... but they look more like 16 
Ho-hum! Still, as the previous poster said, once you've looked at the tutorials and done a couple, your modelling skills DO improve! I just obviously need a lot more practice!
