OMG I'm loving these! LOVE that marbled one! And those BC irises are just gorgeous. I totally respect BC flower makers, mine always sag.

I like polka dots for a quickie, or stripes. With a simple tied bow on top. Rolled ribbon roses are good as well. Here's one I kicked out really quick one morning for my lil sis's bday that I forgot.

what i've done recently that has totally saved my booty was did a light crumb coating on a cake and then w/ a 1M star tip piped big stars all over it. Beats having to ice and smooth a cake. in my gallery i did a two tiered cake w/ bc roses (had those resereved) in less than an hour.

I just made a quickie white cake with lemon filling for a friend. I had white icing made and didn't really want to fuss. It wasn't a birthday cake so it didn't need any writing.

I just iced the cake quick and covered the whole thing with a 1/2 bag of Angel flake cocount (top and sides)!

It looked so pretty and the coconut was a great taste combo with the lemon.

I don't know if it would work for every kind of cake, but it sure saved me some time and energy.

It doesn't require much talent, but an edible image has got to be the quickest decoration on earth. 30 seconds at the printer, a fancy border to dress it up and I'm done!

I agree. And I don't even have a printer! Those who receive are so impressed! ( icon_lol.gif ) I don't tell them my secrets!

I don't know how to do roses...someday, someday!!! So I'll keep a stash of mini-candies (ie, M&M, Malt balls, etc for choc., Tinted coconut for lemon & white, crushed nuts for carrot cakes. Oh yeah, lots of sprinkles...but I'll use a cookie cutter for the center of the cake for the 'decoration'.

When my kids were little, I used to make "candy" cakes -- sheet cakes decorated with suckers, candies, etc.,the type of candy I normally wouldn't let them eat.

Party guests (kids) had more fun with the "candy" cakes & they still remember those cakes even tho my son is 20 years old now!!!

GI - Love your Chocolate M&M cake. I'm big on crushed oreos for the tops but I'll have to look into my candy stash for more inspiration

And now because I'm so shocked to find somebody else out here in the stix. Where in the Tri-Cities are you from?

Ok this one is so quick its kinda cheesy but when you have boy scout christmas party and work full time quick and easy (especially a free cake) this one was what I would call "Good enough!"

I've found that doing borders besides a basic shell always make it look jazzier and add a few flowers. Also, doing something besides a sheet or round cake will make it seem more special. Here are a few examples of cakes I've done for people at work really quickly in the morning before going in. I always procrastinate on things that are a surprise lol

This one for my husband was pretty quick and easy also. Instead of doing two 8" rounds, I mad a 7" round and put it on top of an 8" square:

Then there's always covering the cake with ganache. mmmm:

Hi Cakequeenie

In the UK almost all birthday cakes are either vanilla sponge, filled with vanilla buttercream and seeless raspberry jam. Another popular one is chocolate. Very, very rarely, I'll be asked for a rich fruit cake.

LaSombra - your chocolate ganache cake looks to DIE for!!

melysa - I'm very impressed with your cakes - I love the ribbon ones, they look very simple yet soooo elegant!

(Here's some I like):

This is a great thread, and has given me inspiration for quick ideas when in a pinch - traditionally I have just done a confetti cake or cornelli lace when in a hurry - I can't wait to try some of these! Also, the chocolate wraps are new to me - I'll have to keep that in mind, don't think I've seen them before. How do you do the ribbon roses? Just roll up a strip of fondant? They're super cute!!
