So I've been working at this part time job where my dh also works, doing cakes and stuff. They have been really great with letting me use my creativity and just giving me a lot of freedom. They asked me if I could do a 3D sailboat for a 40th birthday party for Congressman Patrick Kennedy! I was happy to have the opportunity to do a cake that would be seen by so many people. The party was supposed to be for approx. 300 people, but 600 showed up!
(it was open to the public)
I made the sailboat and the other decorator did the full sheet that the boat was on, and they also had a second full sheet. I probably wouldn't have even put the sailboat on top of the sheet cake but the event planner wanted it that way.... To make the sailboat I cut a custom shaped board from foamcore, used RK's for the bow and the rest was carved cake. The whole thing is covered with fondant and I added the fondant details. I wanted to add more details but ran out of time. The sails were the most complicated worrisome thing about this whole cake. I used a hot glue gun for the masts and made the sails from gumpaste. They were over 1 foot tall, and luckily it held together considering they transported it assembled. Everyone liked the cake...so hopefully I will get to do more sculpted cakes through them.
