Hi! I have been asked to make a cake; the decor will require me to make something out of black fondant (and a true red fondant) to match a logo. Does anyone have any ideas on what to use for coloring it? I have heard that eating a very dark fondant is gross, so we can just peel it from the cake and not eat that part, but I do need it for my decor. Ideas? Thanks!
The easiest way to get black and red fondant is to buy it premade - Satin Ice makes them and they can come in 2lb containers so you don't have to get a lot: http://www.intotheoven.com/Fondant-Rolled-Fondant-2-lbs/c118_138_154/index.html
If you don't have time or access to the black Satin Ice, Wilton makes a black you can use for coloring as well. I believe Americolor has one as well.

I was able this last week to successfully make both red and black fondant with just white and wilton coloring, I just had to be fairly liberal with my amounts. Just be patient and use plenty.
You can buy fondant already colored; the Fondx brand is really good, it's made out of chocolate and it tastes like a tootsie roll!!
I've also made black fondant; just took advice from other CC'ers; used chocolate brown first to get the fondant darker, then I used the black; it worked perfectly!!!
I made black and red fondant for my display cakes for the ICES convention. I used Daisy's Fondant Recipe, that ShirelyW posted in a thread about making your own fondant and added the colors in while I was mixing it.
I used Americolor's red and black for it. I never tired the black, but I did sample the red and could only taste the flavors I used (vanilla and orange) and not any adverse flavor from the colors.
You can see my colors on these cakes:
