I am makign an R2D2 cake today and will be stacking 5 layers of 6" roundcakes, do I need to put any cake plates between the layers or can I just stack them all on top of each other and dowel through the center? It is for a birthday party tomorrow.

As someone who has cut an R2D2 groom's cake at a wedding, I would request at least cardboards between every 2 layers. It was a nightmare cutting that cake (especially since I didn't make it, so I had no idea what kind of construction it was..... aaauuuggghhhh!!!). The cardboards at least give the cutter a stopping point .... unless your intent is to give each guest a 6-layer slice of cake.

I would place a board and dowel every 4" high.

I realize you have already done this cake...but this is an important question as I just did a 3 layer (2 x 2 inches, 1 x 3 inches)- 6" cake for my son's "bart simpson" head-birthday cake.
Thankfully I didn't have to travel or the sucker would have fallen over...lol

I also learned that I should have put one more 2" layer in it to achieve the proper face. Oh well...thankfully it was a learning experience and my son loved it. icon_biggrin.gif

I would have definitely put cardboard in it--& dowels if I needed to transport it --and will if I have to do it again.

I hope this helps with future questions..I love to learn from other people's mistakes...lol

I did a three cake high ghost (in my photos), and I assembled it as three cakes - each cake is a whole 8" cake recipe and separated by cardboard and dowels. The top one is carved slightly to get the right shape.
