Opinions Needed. New Business With A Chronic Condition?
Business By libranikki Updated 24 Aug 2007 , 1:55am by libranikki
So for the past few......months (?) I have been working my butt off trying to get my new business off the ground. I have done my business plan and started checking out locations and getting money in order, the whole deal.
I was speaking with potential customers and even managed to book a few cakes.
Unfortunately, all of my orders had to be canceled. I have a rare disease that has no cure and I was told I would need a surgery (my 4th) to help me keep my vision.
I contacted my customers and explained my situation and everyone was understanding.
Now I've had my surgery and I feel OK. I am dying to pick up where I left off, but now I'm starting to second guess my decision.
I LOVE cakes. I long for someone to call me and book a cake. I watch cake shows, I scour the internet for cake pictures, I am obsessed with cake.
I'm still learning as I go, but I am having the best time.
My problem is that my disease is so unpredictable. I have no idea how long my eyesight will remain stable.
I just don't know if starting a business is the best idea......EVER.
If I don't start it I know I will always wonder "what if", but I'm afraid if I do start it, I won't be able to continue.
What do you think?
If I were in the same situation, I think I would take the risk. I wouldn't want to spend the rest of my life on hold, waiting to do what I really wanted.
Ask yourself, what is the worst thing that could happen. Can I live with those consequences? If you could manage that, there is your answer.
Best of luck, and good health to you.
bless your heart!...i'm so glad the operation was a success!
if it's in your heart....i say go for it!...God will help you!
maybe you could make friends with another decorator in your area, so they could take your orders "just in case".
i've done orders for other people that had to cancel for various reasons, it wasn't the end of the world.
let's just pray for good health...He does answer us!
I think You should take a chance. Maybe you can get someone that you can train your way. That way if you have any problems you'll have someone there to help you.
I hope everything will be alright with you.

libranikki ~ I am so glad the surgery was a success.
I completely understand your fears. But I am in concensus wiht the others, and think you have to do it. When I read your post I thought of that chain e-mail that said you shouldn't save your good china, you should always burn your nice candles, etc. I can't remember where it came from though.
Is conducting the business out of your home an option? That would greatly reduce the financial stress of the situation.
Thanks so much for all of your replies and advice and kind words.
I live in FL and they dont allow me to do the business from my home.
But, I have decided to not do it right now.
I had to bake 20 cupcakes for my daughters class for tomorrow and by the time I got to decorating the 10th one, I had to sit down. This disease just takes so much out of me.
I push myself harder then I should sometimes and I wind up paying for it later.
Im going back to the surgeon next Friday because all of my symptoms have returned and he is thinking that Im going to need another surgery.
Its just so unpredictable and disappointing. I wanted so badly to do this business, but I feel like if I am going to be unreliable to my customers then I wont have a good business anyways.
So thanks again! I truly love this website and I will lurk forever because, well, cakes are my passion.
