Hello all, thought it would be fun to see what everyone uses for figures...by figures I mean your babies, animals, little people etc. Or if you use fondant for flowers, I think most flowers are made of a gumpaste mix,I could be wrong though, icon_wink.gif

I have tried Wilton (YUK!!!) thumbsdown.gif homemade (OK, but a pain to make), mmf, and now I only use SatinIce from Into the oven. And I must say, I love SatinIce. The mmf was ok, but it takes out alot of time to make it. I like just being able to grab my tub of SatinIce and go. It's very helpful when I have those 5-6 cake weeks. thumbs_up.gif

I mainly use gumpaste... sometime fondant but I usually like my stuff to dry really hard so I use the gumpaste.

I actually use a lot of different fondants, wilton for figures and flowers that will not be eaten dunce.gif satin for weddings and highend b'days etc.
and mmf for kid cakes, the kids just love it mostly satin ice though icon_wink.gif

I love Fondex.. I am going to get some Satin ice to try too. All I have to say abotu MMF is that it's a PAIN IN THE HEINEY to make.. sticky.. messy.. and i don't think it tastes great.. certainly not better than Fondex. The texture is much chewier than the commercial brands and not worth it to me.

Thanks for sharing!! Where do you find fondex at? I have tried mmf and it is very very sticky and so messy to make....but, is it cost effective to make it verses ordering something like fondex or satin ice?

It is cheaper to make it.. you can make "real" fondant at home too. Michelle Foster's recipe from here in the recipe section gets rave reviews. I got a 10 pound bucket of Fondex (that's the only size) from CalJava http://caljavaonline.com/. The shipping wasn't bad.. I think just under 10$. I think the total was 41$ and change. But it's a lot of fondant so it'll last me through a few cakes.

I have decided that if I am going to use fondant, then I will charge the customer for getting satin Ice. I really like it and it's so easy to work with. If people don't want to pay the extra, then they really didn't want the fondant. I figure it beats making it... though I may try making Toba Garrett's recipe one of these days since I have all the ingredients.

I just made a batch of regular fondant last nite and I was very happy with the texture (didn't take too long to make either!) I don't think I will be making MMF ever again. In the past I have used Wilton fondant mixed with gumpaste for figures and Pettinice fondant to cover cakes, but if this homemade fondant works as well as I think it will, it will be my new standby!

i love MMF - it's so easy to make, always comes out great, and best of all, tastes good.
What does SatinIce taste like? How do you think it compares to MMF? I prefer to make my own, but it would be nice to have a standby for a huge cake or a busy week.

I LOVE Satin Ice but can't get it locally and shipping can be expensive. I use Toba Garrett's recipe and it is great! I am going to try FondX...I understand you can refrigerate it with no "sweating" issues.

here is how I made it.....

1 Tbsp Knox gelatin powder
1/4 cup cold water
1 Tbsp glycerine
1/2 cup light corn syrup
2 Tbsp shortening
1 tsp vanilla or flavoring
8 cups sifted powder sugar

Combine gelatin powder and water in a small pyrex measuring cup and allow to sit for 5 minutes. Add the glycerine, corn syrup, shortening & flavoring; then place the cup into a saucepan half-filled with simmering water. Stir the mixture in the cup until the shortening is melted, remove from heat. In a large bowl, place the powder sugar ~ creating a well in the center. Pour the liquid mixture into the well and stir with a greased wooden spoon. Continue stirring until sugar is incorporated. At this point ~ if it seems sticky, add more powder sugar or if it seems dry, add a few drops of water. Turn the fondant out and knead with greased hands until fondant is smooth and pliable. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and then in a ziplock bag, squeezing all the air out. Allow the fondant to rest for 24 hours at cool room temp before using.

Ok, I am now thoroughly confused. I always use Wilton's fondant for convenience but hate the taste. I have finally decided to make my own but I just don't know what to make. I see so many mentions of Rhonda's Ultimate Fondant, Michelle Fosters, MMF & Toba Garretts. Yikes, any suggestions?

I can only speak for myself. MMF is messy to make and not as easy to work with as traditional fondant recipes. I have used it in the past but only make the Toba Garrett recipe now. It's a cinch to make and is the closest thing to Satin Ice that I have found...without being Satin Ice...which I prefer BTW.

Someone mentioned CalJavaOnline.com... they also sell a White Chocolate rolled fondant -- that comes in several colors -- and it tastes great and works well for modeling thumbs_up.gif

I switched from MMF to Toba Garrett's fondant. It's easier and not as messy and sticky. It also tastes good since it isn't as sweet as MMF. As for Wilton fondant, I only use it to cover my boards.

I have only tried MMF , a recipe I got from a friend and Rhonda's chocolate MMF from CC. I cut the sweetness with salt and flavor. My customers love it. The last tasting I had they actually ate it, and they also love it on my cookies. Wilton fondant is only used for boards, drapes and other things that won'r be eaten.

I will have to try Toba's fondant one day.

I perfer the taste of mmf over the icky wilton stuff but, thats all I have tried...What is Toba Garrets recipe, is that something we can find on here? I know I have heard that name, does she have a seperate website or something?

I only use Satinice now.

I tried mmf, but never could get anywhere near what satinice does for ease of use and flexibility.

So far, no company has come close to the price I pay at intotheoven.com

Their standard price for a 20 lb bucket is $49 and the shipping is also cheaper than anyone else I've found. I pay $26 for 5 lbs locally, so even with shipping, their price is much, much better!

I had ordered 20lbs of chocolate fondant on sale for $41 and a bucket of white for $49. I also had ordered a 8 pack of airbrush colors. The weight on the package was almost 50 pounds but the shipping charge was just $18. To make it even nicer, I got to use a 5% discount code they had posted in their forum!

I ordered on 7/24 and the items arrived on the 27th. They're in Illinois and I'm in Oklahoma. Not bad for ups ground!

I just don't think there's a better price out there on satinice fondant, at least I haven't found it.

I like Satin Ice, but the first time I made MMF, I did a taste test on about 10 people and the said the taste was very. very similar. If I need a lot of Fondant I would use Satin Ice, for a small cake I would go with MMF.

I got a few samples in the mail of chocolate fondant, I was not impressed. I could taste more chemicals than choc. The dark choc was better than the white choc.

Someone had asked on their forum if they had a storefront you could visit and they said they don't, but you can contact them and set up a will call to pick up your order from their warehouse.

I haven't tried MMF, not even sure what it is....
I use Wilton right now, the only pre mixed brand I was aware of, tastes awful. So glad I came in here, have so much more information
Most of my cakes are 3D so fondant is a must... am going to try SatinIce

Have made my own fondant for budgetary reasons and flavor too.. Easy recipe, comes together quick, texture feels good when kneading and rolling then whamm-o lift to place on cake and tears, cracks... no elasticity at all. the more you work with it the softer and thinner it becomes. I made two batches for a pinata cake I made and after working on the feet (starting from the bottom)I was so frustrated, I took it all off and threw the other batch away as well...never, never again!!! icon_cry.gif
The premixed handled so much better, and the colors were vibrant... had to go to town to get more and of course prices had gone up.

The first fondant I made was Rhonda's Ultimate MMF, I was really happy with the results, taste and user friendly. I then read a post on here about a rant prefering Toba's over MMF, so I tried it. Maybe I did something wrong, but I had a terrible time, it cracked, it tore...I tried twice to cover the cake but could not get it to work for me. I ended up making a batch of MMF and it worked.

So if everyone doesn't like MMF that much, why does it seem like so many use it? When I first started on here, (in DEC of 06) it seemed like everyone used MMF, easy, cheap, tasted good, and worked better than any other homemade, now it's different?

I've never used anything but MMF, now I'm wondering what I'm missing and if it is really that different...? (BTW I think I've learned that MMF, even mixed with gumpaste, sucks for molding! I made a figure, first ever, about 5 days ago, and it still isn't dry/hard....)
