I got a call of Friday morning from a gal at my church asking if I could do a cake for 50-75 for that Sunday. She ended up deciding on an 11x15 white with lemon curd and vanilla bc and a 10"x4" (3 layers of raspberry cream) with chocolate bc and a 60 on top made of chocolate. The design was simple with a little scroll work and lots of roses.

When she told me that she was originally going to just "get a cake" and then remembered me, I assumed she meant that she was getting like a Costco sheet cake, so I warned her that it was going to be more expensive than what she was probably going to pay. Then she says, "Well, I was going to give the baker $150. Would that be enough?" icon_eek.gificon_surprised.gif Well, I immediately said that would be fine and had to stop her from trying to give me more. She said, "If that's not enough, I can give you a little more." I told her absolutely not. Then she assured me that she would much rather give me this money than the baker, whom she doesn't know.

Here's my dilemma:

After seeing the cakes below, did I allow her to pay too much? I figured out that I would have asked for about $125. But, my DH says that with the very last minute notice that it should be okay, and that since SHE was okay with it, I should be. I'm in CA, so that needs to be a consideration.

Anyway, anyone have an opinion?

I don't typically do a 2" sheet cake with filling, but I modified my pricing a little bit to cover for that. So the following is what my price would have been. HTH

11x15 sheet cake (2x2x2 serving) = 41 servings x $2.00 = $82.00
10" Double layer w/3 layers of filling (1x2x4 serving) = 38 servings x $2.75 = $104.50

Total $186.50

So not sure what pricing is in your area but you may want to call a bakery or two and just ask them what an 11x15 would be with the filling. This should help you price compare your items.

No, I think you are absolutely fine....it's not as if she were planning on spending $20 and you wanted to charge $150. Your cakes look fresh and delicious icon_smile.gif

THanks everyone -- I feel a lot better about it now. I just start doubting myself and then I can't listen to anyone in my home who really doesn't know about cake. CAn always count on CC!

I think that it's great and if you were to ask my DH he would say that on a last min cake he would have told me to charger $200. He's like that though he gets a bit mad at me when I take on last minute things....takes time away from the last minute things he wants me to do(like a days notice for 100 cupcakes)

Don't feel bad about if you think you are getting too much. Remember, she said she'd rather pay you than a baker that she doesn't know. I'm sure that she is happy that she was able to give you business.
