I've never worked with fondant before & I'm going to attempt a bow for a cake this weekend. I've read the instructions to make a fondant bow & it says I have to let the loops of the bow dry. My question is, how long do I need to let them dry & will fondant reach a point where it just drys out & falls apart? Also, how far in advance can something be made with fondant? I'd like to make the bow tomorrow (Thursday) & the cake Friday but I wasn't sure if the fondant would hold up well until Saturday. Any advice?? (Also if anyone has any helpful hints on working with fondant, I would also appreciate that!!)
I make all my fondant pieces ahead of time. Make sure with the bow, that you put something in the loop to hold the shape while it dries. I put my pieces in a closet so my cat doesn't get them, the sun doesn't shine on them, and they have enough air to dry out. Hope this helps.
Prettycake, it's actually the bow that's on the back of the Wilton ready-to-use pure white rolled fondant. It starts out with 9 loops & a big dot of icing in the center. Then 6 loops are added as the next layer & 3 more as the top center. BTW, your cakes are georgeous!! I hope I can make something like that one day!!
Well ladies & gentlemen, I have to tell you what happened with this bow so I can maybe save someone out there the possibility of having a coronary like I almost did! I mixed my fondant with some gum-tex powder & followed the instructions for making a bow. I made all of my loops (along with a few extra) Thursday evening & I got up early before work on Friday to ice the cake & assemble the bow. I finished everything & it looked great before I left for work. Welllll, I got home & when I went to look at the cake, all of the loops had flattened out!! I almost had a heart attack! I was making this cake for someone & I didn't know what I was going to do at first. After I pulled myself together, I took my loop extras & replaced all that I could & then I took the cake & put it in the fridge. The loops set up very hard within about 1/2 hour . I took it to my friend & the cake was eaten that night, so I don't know how long the loops would have held up. Anyway, do you think I should have let the loops dry longer before I put them on the cake, or could it have been the temperature in my house (too hot?)
Might have been how you dried the loops. If you dry them on their sides then they can't sag in the drying process. If you dried them 'right way up' then the top part would naturally sag down towards the bottom part. I dry mine on their sides or with a roll of kitchen paper (like thick toilet roll) holding the bow open while it dries. I'd leave mine a couple of days to dry thoroughly and make sure I'd mixed enough gum tex in so that the fondant was stiff to work with. Sounds like you handled a tricky situation very well!
