I made and froze a 3d Cruiser cake that I am going to make into a wiggles car cake for my son.
I love the effect of MMF but have never used it ever. Is this even a gamble i should take?
If so, can i put it on the cake while frozen or after it has gotten to room temp?
Should i put it on then cut out the car to make it a convertible or cover it after it's cut?

I have also made a ton of the buttercream so I can (and was originally planning) on going that route. How do you get buttercream super smooth so that it looks like MMF?

Sorry so many questions but this is my first cake and I am soo excited about it!

I did a Lightning McQueen cake for my son's birthday using the 3D car cruiser pan. I wasn't brave enough to do the whole thing in MMF, but I did use MMF details and accents. The base color of red was buttercream. You can check it out in my photos. It was actually a lot easier than I had expected.

Personally I was afraid that I couldn't get the MMF to lay flat onall the curves and bends of car. I am sure it can be done though. Anything can be done.

Yes, I have used MMF on the 3D cruiser before. If you've never used MMF before, I'd suggest you practice with it first. I have found it's a little tricky to get to the right consistency.

If you are going to freeze the cake, I would carve it into the convertible while the cake is still frozen. Then let it thaw before icing it.

If you do a search on the Viva Paper Towel method, it'll show you how to smooth your buttercream very nicely. Basically, let your icing crust, and then use a non-patterend par towel (like Viva) and a fondant smoother (or your hand) to "iron" out the bumps. Works pretty good!

Good luck & have fun with your project!!!!

Thanks ladies-
Both of your car pictures are gorgeous.
I don't think I am daring to try the fondant but i will try the papertowel thingy and perhaps the MMF for my accents!!!

Thanks again!

Make sure the cake is thawed! You will have major problems to decorate with any medium if it is frozen!

Now I made my Cinderella cake using MMF for the first time. It came out great, but maybe that was beginners luck. If you make MMF, just make sure to use the recipe with shortening in it and to roll it out with shortening.

Im pretty new at this just tried mmf for the first time last week I LOVED IT it was soooooooo easy! I used the recipie off of this site and advice on the site that said not to use the whole 2 lb bag of sugar and added 1/3 cup of crisco. It was soo easy to work with, there is a picture of it in my pictures (good thing it was practice the cake was falling apart LOL told you I was new at this). I would make a batch early to make sure that you can get the consistancy right, it took me 2 tries (most things do icon_lol.gif )

How do you look at a users picture? The only way i know how to find pictues is by going to the galleries and searching, but when I type in a user name, I don't get pictures. icon_confused.gif

Any help would be much appreciated!

To see the photos while you are reading forums, click on "photos" which appears on the bottom of each box that people have posted their comments in.
To see photos from gallery, just click on the member's name and then "all photos by soandso" and it will bring up just their pics.
Hope this helps.

By the way..Annie if it helps at all, I covered my 3d cruiser cake in fondant completely.
Here it is..

Good luck with the car. I have found MMF dries quickly, so all I can suggest is to work fast!

To do the windows on the car, I used wilton black paste colour and mixed it with gin and painted on streaks by painting diagonal lines and painting over every second one or so to create that streaky window look.
It was actually really easy as I had never painted on fondant ever before!
It was also my first ever car cake.
