I really need some advice on a cake recipe & buttercream type frosting for a cake decorating contest. The cakes won't be tasted and will be sitting out in a barn for 4 days...unfortunately It has to be a real cake....any ideas...seems like a waste that no one will taste it....Please help icon_smile.gifTHANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

use an all shortening decorator icing. There is one here in the recipes, and there is a basic Wilton recipe on the Wilton site. As for cake, pound cake would probably be very sturdy.

I really appreciate your post...I am in a time crunch.....I will be covering it with fondant do you think the mmf is a good choice or is there a more sturdy recipe that looks great but not so tasty? Again thank you!!!!!

I would also do a pound cake (cake mix) it is VERY sturdy and a little on the "dry" side so that would be even better. Also, I agree on the ALL crisco BC recipe and if possible (if it is in your plans) cover with fondant, that makes a cake last even longer. HTH and good luck!

whatever fondant is cheapest that you still like to work with is best... and if you like mmf then thats it. Use pound cake for the inside. It is sturdy and will not spoil (well, from a display POV) for a looong time.
