I have been asked to make a spider cake for halloween. I have seen many wonderful spider cakes in the gallery. I am curious as to how to make the body of the spider. Several people have told me to just use a plastic or styrofoam ball, but I would like to use something edible. Any suggestions??

If you want a big spider body you could use the sport ball pan or if you want to have a smaller spider on top of a cake you could make a ball of rice krispie square and cover it with fondant.

What about using the Wilton ball pan and then the mini ball pan for the head? This would give you the 3-d effect as well.

Some ideas: the first is a layer cake with web; the second using ball pan and cupcake; the third is another regular layer cake.
and last but not least... icon_evil.gif evil chuckle....

I used half the sports ball pan, and a cupcake for the head for the one in my photos.

I used the Wilton mini ball pan for the body and a donut hole for the head then covered both in buttercream. If you look in my photos you will see him.

I also use 1/2 of the sports ball pan and a cupcake for the head.

There is another spider on here that just uses (I think) half the ball pan with legs coming out of it. Looks cute.
