I want to paint a picture on a buttercream iced cake. Can I use the color paste and add water and use it like that or what do I use? Please help.

I've always heard that you use food color with a bit of vodka or if it is for children, then mix it with a clear extract, like lemon. Also, I've heard you can use chocolate with cocoa butter.
