We have until Thursday to create a cake for a photo shoot for a cake that will be featured in a local bridal magazine. It is going to be a full page photo and they want something colorful. We have a bunch of ideas but I thought I would check with you guys and see what ou can come up with.

It doesn't have to be over the top colorful, we want something that will appeal to the masses, but it should have some colored aspects.

We will be using fondant as the base. We can add color with ribbon, flowers, etc so the cake itself can be white.

Let's see your very favorite colorful wedding cakes!!! icon_biggrin.gif

A student of mine did a beautiful cake with lavendar fondant and did a gorgeous buttercream embroidery technique on the cake in white. It was elegant and colorful. I cannot post since it is not my cake. I thought she posted it but I cannot find it. If I do, I will let you know.

Any color fondant with this technique on it would be a stunning wedding cake.

I think fall leaves and autumn colors are a romantic idea for cakes at this time of year.

I think going with the Fall theme is smartest! Don't know that I would use a topsy turvy cake as a lot of people don't understand it yet. They'd think it was lop-sided!

Well, it's all over, here is my mini recap...

I called the publisher and gave her some color combos and she chose a black- red- white theme (I guess she didn't want vibrant colors, she just didn't want it to be all white)

Cake photo shoot starts: 9:30AM Thursday morning, at our shop.

This week we had 10 weddings, 2 grooms cakes, 2 anniversary cakes, and a couple of sheet cakes which is quite a bit of work for just my wife and I... and we found out about making this cake on Friday.

10:00PM Wednesday night: we decide to dump the cake we had been working on for the shoot because it kinda sucked. I hop in the car and head to WalMart Supercenter to pick up some more fondant (we use Wilton for fake cakes). After picking up 15lbs of fondant, a bottle of Vodka(not for drinking, for caking), and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2007 for XBOX I returned home around 11PM.

11:15PM Wednesday night: Since our sheeter is at the shop and we were making the fake cake at home, we start rolling out fondant bt hand (which sucks worse when you are used to using a sheeter) for the 4 square dummies.

Midnight (9.5 hours before photo shoot): 3 square are covered and we decide to start working on the design to make sure that this one is going to look decent.

1:00AM: 3 tiers are done and we decide that it looks pretty good. The wife is getting tired so she hits the bed. I stay up and cover the final dummy in fondant.

1:30AM: It's done, except for the design on the last layer. I am tired so I get some sleep.

7:30AM (2 hours to the photo shoot): we get up and my wife gets the design on the final layer and she decides that she will build them at the shop in an hour or so.

8AM- I head to the shop to make sure the area we are shooting looks respectable.

9:15AM: The photographer shows up... early... and my wife hasn't arrived with the cake (which still needs to be assembled). I call her, she is 10 minutes away.

9:25AM: Wife arrives and starts building the cake

9:35AM: Magazine employee arrives with the tablecloth.

9:40MM: The table is set, the cake is assembled but the photograher wants to get a background from his truck. He gets the background and sets it up... but in my opinion it totally clashes with the tablecloth & tulle combo. Oh well, we are shooting anyway.

10:00AM: Everything is done. The cake looks pretty good considering that 12 hours ago it was 4 blocks of styro and we didn't even own the fondant we were going to use to cover it. It wasn't perfect, but it was a pretty nice save if I do say so myself.

The only problem is... I don't see anyway that they are going to put a picture in their publication with a background and tablecloth that clash as much as these do. I called yesterday and mentioned the background issue, hopefully they will have me take it into a studio and reshoot it... or maybe just crop the background out.

Oh well, here is the quickie wedding cake we came up with (weird background stuff and all)

Thanks! We picked up some craft stencils at JoAnn's, held them to the cake and went over them with royal icing. It is pretty easy except when you get seeping. Colored royal doesn't remove all that easily, so you pretty much hope the first time is perfect.

Thanks Jess! For some reason when I look at of our pictures I only notice the stuff in the background (I usually point it out to brides during tastings... but they never seem to notice either icon_biggrin.gif )

The cake looks great and the background really doesn't clash from my view. You all did a wonderful job and I think that even if the magazine doesn't change it, the cake design will speak for itself. Congratulations!!!!
I looked at the background again and I really wouldn't make a big deal out of it. The magazine probably has dealt with other cake decorators who made a big stink of things. You definitely want them on your side for business purposes. Any customer that contacts you will have their own setup at the reception anyway!!!! (Hopefully)
