A Cake That Doesn't Look Like A Cake!

Listen to this:
This weekend, my friend celebrated his 50th birthday in style. He had a cool luau themed party with hula girls, flame throwing artists, a great band, a roasted pig and even a fabulous tiki bar. It was utterly fabulous fun!!!!
I created the cake for him as a gift. It seemed that the cake was a big hit with the party members and fun was had by all. A lot of people asked me if I had cards, yadda, yadda, yadda. Well, I was quite happy with the fact that the guests seemed to enjoy my cake and I, too, had a good time at the party.
That was until a lady came up to me and said, "You know, I hate to be the one to break it to you darlin', but it is so ridiculous that your cake doesn't look like a cake. It looks like some Fisher Price kids toy!" I was a bit shocked but said to her, as politely as I could, "Well, at least it tastes like a cake, right?" She replied, "There is no way I will eat a cake that doesn't even look like something edible". Honestly, I wanted to say, "Look! The whole point of that cake is to NOT LOOK LIKE A CAKE! Don't you get it you snooty lady?" But, I just said, "Well, perhaps you should try the fruit", and I walked away.
Geez! Can you believe that??
What is so strange about the whole encounter is that I had an aunt tell me that she wouldn't want a cake that doesn't look like one! Does that seem odd to you, or are there a lot of people out there that feel the same way??
Sounds like that lady needs to pull the pineapple out of her #$%!
Your cake sounds awesome. Did you post?
Rude! Your cake is incredible, I can't even imagine why she would say something so rude.
But it sounds like it was a hit with everyone else and the party was a great time. Had she by any chance contributed something to the party that was overshadowed by your incredible cake?
That was really unkind of her. Makes you just want to say, "That's funny, because everyone else here can't seem to get enough of it." I am sorry that some people are so dense. At least everyone else 'got it'!! (And boy, does that party sound like fun!!)
I have people who only want traditional cakes and then those who are willing to have a "sky is the limit cake" on creativity. When people say rude things like that woman did they have no imagination. There inner child has been crushed out of them it hard to imagine they still function. I looked at all of your work and it's amazing. Hold your head high and continue on doing what you do best. The trends in decorating are moving towards sculpted cakes and you do an awsome jpb with that!
Well, I guess there are a lot of different people out there with different tastes. And you will always find someone who doesn't like just about anything. The point is, your cake was a hit. You can't please everyone, especially someone who feels the need to come over and be negative - Criticism like that is clearly meant to make you feel bad. I wouldn't take her words to heart.
She's just griping cos she could probably never imagine doing something so wonderful in her whole life. You know there are people like that! They spoil the fun for others if they can, but don't let her bother you.
That cake is FABULOUS, and I can only imagine her face when you told her to go try the fruit! ![]()

...Sounds to me like maybe they are closet cake decorators and were JEALOUS!!!! lol
Oh, KHalstead, you always can make me laugh and I so appreciate all your nice comments regarding my cakes! You, Da Bomb, KHalstead!!! ![]()
Sounds like that lady needs to pull the pineapple out of her #$%!
OMG! That is soooooooooo funny! You made my day! Yes! I posted to my album.
Thanks for cheering me up!!
The cake is gorgeous!!!
I've heard of some people not really being able to eat "someone" or a person that's made out of cake.
But, no one would go out of their way to say that to you if it wasn't for pure jealousy talking.
I first thought rudeness, etc., but after you said it was your aunt, I think it's jealousy.
Sounds to me like she had her grass skirt tied a little to tight!
You're cake is amazing! Personally I think what's important is that the person you made the cake for was happy with it. There are always going to be critics and you can't please them all!
Cakes Unleashed...what a freaking YAHOO! soooooo...then....she would REALLY have a problem with MY cakes...
I try to make them look as "REAL" as possible..hahahahaa
'wink, wink..nudge, nudge...."
so, for your auntie...make her the cake that has a slice of cake on top hhahaaa! that can't get more real looking! lol

RisqueBusiness, I bet you are a hoot to hang with! You would've had fun at that party. I think most of the people were hoping for one of your cakes!!!!!
It's not too strange - my mom is the same way. I show her some of the most awesome cakes on CC and she goes "but it doens't look like a cake". DUH! It's SUPPOSED to look like a work of edible art
She's also big on colors too - No, you can't make the icing blue - people won't want to eat it, no it can't be this color - it won't look good - who wants to eat maroon icing, etc.?? I for one have never looked at a cake's colors and gone "eew" I can't eat purple icing...... of course, most of the cakes I've ever seen had white icing anyway - I've never been anywhere that someone had a very elaborate cake - except for weddings and those cakes are traditionally white anyway....
Some people just don't get it - or they are traditionalists and just prefer things to look like what they're supposed to be - they'd all probably flip over those cakes that look like steaks or fish or something like that - it's too confusing for them!
However, that lady was just rude. There's NO reason for her to come and tell you that....... as for your aunt, I'll spare her a little bit there b/c she's family and maybe she thought she was "helping". But for someone who doesn't even know you to tell you "well it doesn't look like cake...." I'd just be like, "thanks - that's the point - it's supposed to look like art but you can eat it too - and boy does it taste great!" - see what they say to that!
oh, yeah, by the way....You're cakes are TRULY awesome!
I wish I wasn't so busy churning them out to pay rent so I can really get into my Art!
lol
Love Love your work!
Oh yeah, I can HULA TOO...ungracefully..but darn it, I PAID for those lessons.....hahahaaa!
I am sort of a strange duck myself when it comes to eating stuff, I could never eat a baby shower cake that looked like a preggo belly, I can't eat gummy bears or worms, and in my family we wont even eat the part on edible images that is a person's head or something! That said.....I think it was rude for someone to come up to you and comment on it.....like I said in my previous post.....it does look too good to cut but even I could have found something to eat on it!
You know what would have been funny? When she made the comment, you should've gotten this stricken look of abject terror and screamed, "Oh my GOD... people are eating the centerpiece!?!!? That's TOXIC!!!" And then run away from her. She would've just huffed at you... but I believe (as often as humanly possible) you should handle the jerks with humor.
I mean, she's entitled to her opinion, but sometimes, we wish people would keep it to themselves.
I know they feel the same about us at times too!
