I am just starting the Wilton Course Fondant and Gum Paste. For almost all the fondant decorations, the book calls for you to mix half and half with the fondant. This seems pretty expensive to me. I've begun to get a little suspicious of some of Wilton's instructions in the book. For example, in lesson one, it had me buy the expensive fancy foil to cover the cake board which was then totally covered with fondant. I could have easily, and much more cheaply, used regular foil

Gumpaste is necessary to harden and dry the fondant. GP dries harder and faster than fondant, mixed together, they make a good product for drapes and figures.

You will get better results if you use some gumpaste. I make my bows out of gumpaste only--they dry quickly and hold their shape so well.

As for covering the board with fancy foil, that looks a lot better than regular aluminum foil. However, if it's going to be covered with fondant, it certainly doesn't matter what you use!

Welcome to CC!

If you can get your hands on some tylose powder here is a fantastic recipe for gumpaste:

I just used it to make the cradles for my most recent baby shower cake. I didn't care for the wilton gumpaste at all but this stuff was great to work with!

I learned with Wilton early on... take the course, learn the how to and then buy better edibles else where.

Fondant, gum paste, etc...

for some sick reason though everyone I bake for LOVES their BC frosting and wants it when they taste it. My dog wouldn't even touch it AND I DON'T HAVE A DOG (get the joke??)

It's OK to me taste wise.
