Hello all you wise folks.
I am making a cake that is due for tomorrow (it's already 4:30pm where I live) and was wanting to make it with fondant with the diamonds ont he bottom layer and circles on the top. Apparently I am having a malfunction when it comes to my fondant. I've been looking thru other problems with the fondant and am SO frustrated after trying the cures suggested in those. The fondant won't roll out nicely, when I get it semi nice, it breaks off. I colored some of it light blue, but it seems to be happening with the fondant that is not colored yet also. I've tried adding more water. I've tried adding more crisco, and have tried heating it for a moment in the microwave with no relief. It doesn't "feel" dry, it just doesn't seem to want to stay together for me. I was tempted to just ice the cake in buttercream and use fondant accents, but really wanted to do it in fondant if I could. Due to my location, I cannot go out and buy premade fondant (though I WISH I could!)...any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I'm willing to try anything within my means! ![]()
TIA!
Keyshia
I'm sorry, if adding water and crisco and microwaving don't help, then I don't know what could!
Those are all the common solutions. Somehow your MMF sounds too dry, but if doing all those things doesn't help, I'm not sure what there could be to do except start over. Hopefully someone else will see this and have more words of wisdom.
Thank you. Maybe I'm not adding enough extra fluid? I'll try again... The last time I made MMF I didn't have any problems with it and it went on like a dream...this time, I've made 3 batches and they're all doing the same thing!!
I've put it down for a bit so I can try to approach it at a different angle.
Maybe a break will give me the patience to get it done.
is it humid there?
I had a batch last night that I had issues with, I finally just let it sit, and will see what the deal is when I get off work...It was opposite your issue though, too sticky and stretchy...no idea why other than I thought humidity...But I also added a lot of corn syrup, which may have done it...That's what I get for following a recipe...last 5 times I've made it it has been "from memory" which is more like poor a little water in, a little vanila, a little crisco and bam" (bad memory hu?)! HE HE

Horselady,
It is humid here...but I made the last one it was equally (or maybe more) humid? I live in Turkey, the humidity is about the way it is on the east coast...with 110 temps to accompany it! Ugh...can handle the heat, but not the humidity...I'm a california girl all the way...haha. Well, I got my 2nd color to work, the green and got it on my 6 in cake. I'm praying I don't wake up tomorrow to it laying on the ground... I haven't started working the the blue again yet, but plan to shortly. I just want to get it done already...haha...might not attempt too much fondant after this fiasco...too stressful!
Don't Give up! I love Fondant (even though my family and co-workers peel it off and can't stand the taste, lol) It opens up so many doors decorating wise....I couln't live without it and admire the BC people who can still make a cake gorgeous with plain BC, but it still doesn't compare, IMO...

(PS it's way humid here, but not as hot, TG! I love heat, hate humidity!
)
Ok...after trying to do the moisture, heating a few more times, I put it where it belonged (in the trash) and made a new batch. I wanted to try to make a bow for the top of the cake, so I cut out little strips to try to dry (not sure if I'll have time, but I'm trying.
It seemed to work SO much better. I think I messed up by putting TOO much sugar in it. I am letting the rest (other than the parts I am drying for my bows) to sit overnight and will cover the cake first thing in the morning. Sheesh...sometimes I wish my brain didn't give me cake pictures...haha. Thanks for the great advice.
