How would you go about doing this without an impression mat? I figure dots and then connect them, but how do I do the dots properly? I've never done anything without a mat. Help!!!!

wow, that is pretty.
I'm guessing you are right about making a swiss dot pattern and then just connecting the dots. That is how I'd do it.

here's a bump incase someones else has a better idea.

That pattern is called a "wedding ring" pattern, and that's a quilting term! My Mom is an avid quilter and made me a double-wedding ring quilt for a wedding gift! It's one of her favorites!

I've never done that pattern on a cake, but would probably start with a swiss dot impression mat, then use the right size cirlce cutter "ring" to gently press into the icing to make an outline to follow (conecting the dots). I have the Ateco circle cutter set and I'm sure one of those would work perfectly! It's just a series of intertwined/overlapping circles! Very pretty!

I would so use a dot mat then just make the "dots" bigger and connect them actually looks simple...you can do just set your mind to it..

Layout the dot pattern or even a ring pattern on your computer and print it out. Trace the pattern with a sewing tracing wheel or pin prick it, then line up the paper on the side of the cake and rub the design into the side of the cake. Trace the design with your icing.

This is one of my favorite patterns for quilts.

Before I even read cambo's description this is what I was thinking also. Layout your dots then use a circle ring or cutter to mark the circles.

Thank you, thank you for all your helpful respones. Last night laying in bed, trying to sleep, this cake pattern was keeping me awake. The only good thing about that is I came up with the answer. I have a friend that is a graphic artist. king.gif He uses photoshop. I am going to get him to make this pattern and then print it out for me. I will use it like an impression mat! icon_biggrin.gif
