they were showing 2 different shops, have to forgive me but I can not remember the names due to short memory..lol..long day... but anyhow they were saying that cupcakes have become really popular and they thought they were here to stay. That everyone goes wild over them..they were showing a line of people trying to get into the shops. I was glad to see this airing because I am wanting to get into more cupcakes.

Cupcakes are very popular for wedding's too. My son and Daughter-in-law asked me to make them cupcakes for their wedding back in June. I happily obliged. Boy that was a lot of cupcakes though! But they turned out nice, thankgoodness thumbs_up.gif

I did not see the program, but I am wondering if the cup craze really is here to stay. I have gotten hooked on a few cc sites, wandering to people's sites at 3a when I can't sleep.

Wilton is getting into cc stuff, BUT I have to say, I had to return the happy feet cc cups--they fell over when I iced them. When I called them on that--they said they had been tested thoroughly and I must have used too much icing--I made them look like their packaging!! They ended up refunding my $$$ after I mailed them to them.

I just wonder how long this craze will last. I can see it being a good market--you can deco them like cakes and people would buy them vs a full cize cake when they are hankering for something sweet and not a cookie.

Oh geesh! As one of the "old ladies" on here, I am here to tell you that everything cycles and nothing is here "to stay"!

On a personal note, I HATE cupcakes at a wedding. To me, it's the ultimate "tacky".

I will agree that if you are having a very casual reception, such as a backyard BBQ or something, the casual look of cupcakes fits in very well.

But as a wedding guest at a formal wedding reception, I'm all dressed up in an expensive dress and you want me to stuff an icing covered cake in my face???? Because odds are good there is no plate and fork to go with it.

Please don't flame me..... it's just my personal opinion on what I consider tacky at a wedding.

If this works, this is the link to view the video from this morning --

http://video.msn.com/v/us/msnbc.htm?g=913bcebd-6685-4a61-adf6-0e2640efc9c0&f=05&fg=rss

I haven't been able to watch it yet. There have been so many cupcake stories on TV lately.

I personally love to do cupcakes and really do love doing cupcakes for a wedding; however, I do agree with Debi that I think it is very much a phase. I have a couple of really great cupcake stands for weddings (like one in my pics) and a couple of brides have purchased things themselves, but I don't plan to invest any more money into them, as I worry how much longer this will last!

Southerncake, I love your chocolate-strawberry cupcakes you did for that wedding. I think the whole setup and table display look's divine!

If you look in my pic's, (excuse me I mean pic LOL) This is the wedding cupcake tier I made for my son's wedding. NOTHING TACKY OR CASUAL ABOUT IT!

Indydebi your welcome to your opinion, I wont flame you icon_smile.gif !LOL But I have seen some very elegant cupcake display's for wedding's, just as their are some that look tacky, It's all in how you make the whole presentation. The same can be said about wedding cakes.

Oh, by the way, we did have plates and forks and napkins to go with the cupcakes thumbs_up.gif

Ginny, the cupcake display is lovely! I also had a cupcake tower at my wedding. A chef friend of mine did a giant tiered display of chocolate, vanilla and carrot cakes, with fresh flowers in between every tier. People were gasping when they saw it. I was so pleased with how it came out.

I think they could look tacky, I guess, if not displayed correctly. But I think cupcakes can be incredibly elegant as well. I like them because they're so versatile and I don't need to worry about dowels and layers (which I suck at, heh heh). My friends like cupcakes because they are one, small, portable serving. I think they are here to stay. icon_smile.gif

Thank you Ginny for your kind comments. I did really love that set up -- it went well with the decor of the room and the whole feel of the wedding. I also love your tower!!

On the other hand...I did one cupcake setup using the same stand as the one in my pics and it was one of the tackiest things I have ever seen!!! The "florist/decorator" was there at the same time as me so that she could help with the setup and use the same cloth, flowers, etc., as the rest of the reception. I have never posted it in my pics and would really hate for anyone to know that I did it!! It was tacky, tacky, tacky!!!

Thank you southerncake.
I was crunched for time trying to get everything set up. I actually had a friend helping me put the cupcakes on the tower. I had some beautiful cake stand's that were supposed to hold more cupcakes and go on each side of the tower, but were left back at the hotel by accident, I wont blame anyone tapedshut.gif (hubby), and the MOB wanted me to put all cupcakes on table, so that's what we did.LOL

I mean, let's face it.

They're clean
They bake in less than half an hour
They're cool 15 minutes out of the oven
They don't have to be leveled or torted
They're easy to fill - just plunge, squeeze, & move on
They don't need crumbcoat
They ice in about 3.5 seconds with a 1M
You can line them all up in their tray, ice them all at once, and be done with it
NO DOWELLING!

You know I have to totally disagree about cupcakes for weddings as tacky. I LOVE them for weddings! And every wedding cupcake tree I've done has had plates AND forks, thank you very much.

I love to see them at a wedding...the cupcake displays I have seen are sooo pretty. I didn't care for cupcakes or the look of them before I started seeing the ones here and then I quickly changed my mind!!!
I did some lately for the admin's birthday at work...they were muted floral colours and I think they would be great for a wedding on the right display..
BUT ...I found they were more work than a cake icon_lol.gif

YAYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! party.gif

Whenever I've had people talk about cupcakes for a reception they tend to point out how they save money because they dont' need plates and forks. So I'm VERY glad to hear this isn't the norm!!

I saw the program this morning. They featured a cakeshop Magnolia something that makes these red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting!!! YUMMY

I went to my cupboard in search of CHOCOLATE!!!

BTW I am a newbie and love making cupcakes! They are a lot of fun. I just recently found the youtube (thanks to a cc member) and will be doing cupcakes with that decorating technique for my friend's baby shower. I will make cupcake bouquets for the table decorations!

Naw Pearl70, I know you didn't say they were tacky, but INDYDEBI did!!!
icon_razz.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif awww indydebi you know I love ya!!!

It's all in the presentation I think. I do know that some brides use them to save a bit of money on cake cutting fees.....which depending on the caterer can add up to almost buck a slice for wedding cakes icon_eek.gif YIKES

FYI: The bakeries the show was talking about were: The Magnolia Bakery and a Bakery called Sprinkles!! According to the show, they say the cupcake craze is here to stay!! These bakeries had people lined up outside to buy their product!! I think it would be a blast to have a business like that, however I would still want to do cakes. They say that the cupcake let's people indulge without so much guilt!!

If I remember correctly, I think Sprinkles is the same cupcake cafe that was on Oprah. If so, I later saw the owner on another show and she said that the morning after the Oprah show aired they had customers wrapped around several blocks!!! What great advertising!!!!

I wonder if there are any companies out there that make different colored cupcake papers. I'm getting bored with white, pink, yellow, green. I want purple, fucshia, emerald, cobalt, tie-dye, lime green, polka dots!!!!
