There is a cupcake only bakery in my town that opened a little over a year ago. Two months ago, I saw a listing on CraigsList that they were for sale. When I e-mailed about the price, I was told they were selling so they could "travel more". Yeah right... there was never a line into their shop. Some towns are just to "cheap".

I like the idea of cupcakes, but not as a sole venture. Especially when you are charging $3 apiece.

My local shop charges $1.95 for regular, $2.50 for specialty flavors, and $2.95-3.50 for jumbo. Minis are $11.00 per dozen and $.20 per letter for fondant lettering.

They also sell coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and bottled drinks.

I was surprised at the low price, especially in the neighborhood they are in. I know they could get a higher price.

This year I went to San Francisco.......we tried Meitte.......not only was the $3 cupcake pure crap so was the awful lady waiting on me...............then we tried Citizen Cupcake... that was pretty good................I dont think I like cupcakes icon_cool.gificon_cool.gif

Of course i only sell cupcakes in my shop for walk ins.............(Im a made to order shop)and I sell out of them every day........I think people like them because they are a single serving and maybe they wont over indulge that way icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

At Michaels they also have some different colored liners - they're in the Martha Stewart area - they're not called cupcake liners, but on the back it says they can be used for cupcakes or muffins.

If I remember correctly, I think Sprinkles is the same cupcake cafe that was on Oprah. If so, I later saw the owner on another show and she said that the morning after the Oprah show aired they had customers wrapped around several blocks!!! What great advertising!!!!

Yep, it is indeed the same one that was on Oprah. And they did say that Sprinkles got a ton of business after being aired on there.
I did my 1st wedding in cupcakes. She was absolutely firm on not wanting any trees, stands etc. We created a display using glasses and white table cloths. We also had candles. It was so pretty and I didn't get a pic at all....yep kicking myself. The colors were chocolate and mint. I made chocolate colored gumpaste roses and bows for the cupcakes ontop of mint green icing. The used a jumbo cupcake just for taking the pic and had an anniversary tier of course. It was very elegant, I was proud icon_lol.gif
The cupcake craze had actually been booming in certain areas around the US for years per my research 3 yrs ago. That's why I wanted to get into it. I did see The Today Show and am excited 'cause I think its time for our area to have one and with a name like Cupcake Cutie Etc. I might get a little shine when I get the storefront open. icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif And hey, if it doesn't work out, I still have custom cakes and weddings. icon_biggrin.gif That's what the Etc. is all about. icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

I guess I'm also confused on the term "new craze". Did cupcakes go in and out and in of "vogue" recently? In my lifetime?? icon_confused.gif This is news?? icon_confused.gif

I'm with you indydebi, I was not ever aware cupcakes had become unpopular at any point.

BUT - I think once you start seeing bakeries selling cupcakes for 3 bucks a pop, you can then put it into the "craze" category icon_rolleyes.gif

"Craze" of course meaning "crazy"....which is what you must be to pay 3 bucks for something some bakers make simply to get rid of surplus batter on wedding cake baking day..... icon_surprised.gif

Sprinkles is doing the same thing for cupcakes the Starbucks did for coffee. Before you know it, there will be a Sprinkles on every corner. We have a Sprinkles here in Dallas, and I've heard mixed reviews.

I was very dissappointed with Sprinkles. I make a better cupcake, and I'm sure many of you would as well. They say they bake from scratch using only the finest ingredients. I think that's what gets people in the door, I'm sure the mention on Oprah helped a lot. Definitely not worth $3.25 each, I can make a dozen for that much.

That website is FABULOUS!! Has anyone ever tried the chocolate papers? I can't figure out how they work, how do you use them?
