I just bought the Wilton Floral Collection Flower Making Set on Saturday. Yesterday I bought the Wilton Gum Paste Mix so I could "play". However, after following the directions to a T, my gumpaste was still sticky. Does humidity have anything to do with it? Should I add more confectioners sugar to hopefully dry it up? Any suggestions would be helpful. TYIA!

If it's still sticky when you place it on your board to roll it sprinkle some confectionary sugar on it so it doesn't stick. Also you should have a puff ball at your side at all times. This makes it easier because you will alway's need powedered sugar when doing Gumpaste. Get some cheese cloth a (yard), unfold all the way then fold but leave enough so you can place the powdered sugar in the middle. Tie it up at the top and place it in a container and keep it with your stuff so it's alway's at your side. This way you just shake as much as you need on your board or Gumpaste when needed. Place some loose in the bottom of the container too this way you have it when you need it. (does this make sense) I have one more class left on this and this is one of the first things we were told. Good luck. icon_biggrin.gif

it is just like any baking . . . there is always a little fudge factor depending on temperature and humidity.

Also - work a little crisco (just a little) into a small lump of it to relieve mild stickiness.

Knead in some Crisco, a little at a time, until it is no longer sticky. Be VERY conservative with the powdered sugar. I would suggest only adding it at the end of your modeling so your piece doesn't stick to the surface you are placing it on to dry. Too much sugar will make your gumpaste dry and crumbly and impossible to work with. And it's VERY EASY to add too much sugar!

Until I started making Nicholas Lodge's gumpaste recipe, I used the Wilton mix all the time. Worked fine for me.

Adding more icing sugar will make it stickier. If you add too much then it's going to be really dry. Weird I know. Try kneading in some Crisco. Use Cornstarch to roll out your gumpaste.

As a rule I use cornstarch for my gumpaste and if i have to powdered sugar for my fondant.

Sorry beckbhappy, I didn't realize even though you typed it that you purchased theWilton Gumpaste. I make my own. Disregard because I as can see here it's very different.
