To Ribbon Or Not To Ribbon?

I really need some advice from other cake designers. I have a 4 tiered square wedding cake in September. In the picture the bride is using, there is a big bow on top with 1 wide ribbon on each side flowing all the way to the bottom of the cake. (made of fondant) The bride and groom have decided not to use the bow, and use a bride and groom cake topper. They still want the ribbons on each side flowing down. Don't you all think that is going to look a little tacky? Maybe thin real ribbon instead of fondant? The groom wants the ribbon to be wavy and not sticking to the cake all the way down. He also said he wouldn't mind if the ribbons weren't completely straight going down either. Hmm... I just don't know if this is going to look right. If you all agree, do you think it would be wrong of me to tell her it may not look right on the topper? Or just do what I can, since this is her wedding cake. Thank you all for any help you can give.

Ok, I have to admit it really *sounds* goofy looking, but who knows what it would really look like once you did it! You could always put it on there and then if it looks weird, take it off! In the end, you'll have to do whatever they *think* they want! But again, once it's put together it could end up looking neat! Good luck!

I think it is okay to tell the bride that you aren't sure the ribbon will look right with the topper she has chosen. Then maybe offer her some alternative suggestions. She can decide what she really wants and you'll hve to abide by that decision. But at least you will have let her know your thoughts. If she isn't someone who does cake designs, she probably just doesn't realize that it migth look funny.

I just had a thought... what about flowers or swags instead of ribbons without the bow. That way they would still have something trailing.

Does their topper have a base? Could you tie a small ribbon around with a bow on the front or side (thinking 1/2" - 3/4" ribbon here - so nothing big) so the trailing ribbons don't look so out of place?

I don't know what the topper looks like yet, all she said was it was a Lladro bride and groom topper. When I searched the internet for a pic, it doesn't seem to have a base. It's wierd because she said nothing about their wedding is normal. The cake is 4 tiered, alternating bright pink and white on each tier. There is also a different design on each tier. The bow would have looked great, but they choose a traditional cake topper, go figure icon_rolleyes.gif

I talked to the bride, and she said she was actually starting to wonder if the ribbons would look good herself. So, yay..I don't have to worry about the ribbons now.
