So, I want to make some gumpaste roses in the near future. I got the stepsaving guide with the cutters from my cake decorating store. I open it up, and there's a half a page full of more stuff I need to get!! I know where to get some of the stuff, but I've been checking on the Michaels website and they don't seem to have it all. Also please tell me if certain things are actually necessary or its just Wilton trying to sell their product.

Florist tape (I'm pretty sure I can find this at Michael's, but not 100%)
Foam sponge square 1/8" and 1" thick.
Small wooden rolling pin (Do I need it?)
Modeling Sticks
Styrofoam Blocks-4"x4"x2"
Styrofoam balls-3" Diameter
Flower Formers
Small Tapered Spatula
Crystal-Look Base

Are these the pink Wilton cutters? I have them but got them with the C3 kit so I don't have the directions that come with them, only the directions we use in C3.

As far as your list:
Florist tape - Yes it is in the floral section

Foam sponge square 1/8" and 1" thick - yes, these are used to soften the edges of the flowers. It comes in the C3 kit but you can buy it seperately. If you have a cake supply store you can find the same things just by different companies.

Small wooden rolling pin (Do I need it?) - I would think any rolling pin would work. I use the white one they have out now.

Modeling Sticks - I'm wondering is this is the ball tool?

Styrofoam Blocks-4"x4"x2" - my guess is that is for you to stick them in while they are drying.

Styrofoam balls-3" Diameter - Umm, do they tell you what these are used for?

Flower Formers - Hmmm... With the directions I have we don't use these, but there are several different ways to do them. Unless these are used for the leaves.

Small Tapered Spatula - This is to help get your gumpaste off what you roll it out on, and to cut the petals.

Crystal-Look Base - not sure what this is.

No, it's not the ball tool. They ask for the confectionary tool set. Um, can anyone else help who has this set? I should have bout the $20 thing with all the stuff in it, but I already have that.
Yes the flower formers are for the leaves. The styrofoam ball and crystal-look base are for making a bouquet. You put a half ball in the crystal thing and stick flowers in it.

Ok, I think I've figured out that the foam sponge squares, 1/8" and 1" thick are actualy just Wilton's Fondant Shaping foam set. I think this can be found at Michael's.

Actually, do you think it would be worth it to just buy the $20, even though I have the rose and calyx cutters?

a great $ saving tip I've learned her is to cut open paper towel rolls or wrapping paper rolls and use those for flower formers. Also, people use egg cartons.

Small wooden rolling pin (Do I need it?) == Naw, any rolling pin will doicon_smile.gif
Modeling Sticks - I'm wondering is this is the ball tool? == No but an extra long toothpick will work usually. Any pointed fondant tool should also.

Styrofoam Blocks-4"x4"x2" == Any piece of styro probably will work just fine.
Small Tapered Spatula == The thinner, more flexible the better.
Crystal-Look Base & 3" styro ball == Are you actually going to make a topper? You could just make a bouquet or whatever you want.

I use the following to make my roses:
ball tool
gum paste
foam sponge
cel shape styrofoam cone
wire
floral tape
rose cutter
rose veiner
leaf cutter
leave veiner
spoons
petal dusts
You dont need a flower former. You can use pieces of foam or papertowel to separate your petals until their dry. I usually stick them into a piece of styrofoam and do this.

I'm finally a regular member!!!!

I would wait on the kit. I have heard that Wilton will eventually do away with that kit. I'm not sure how much of that is truth and how much is rumor, but...

I would save your money then look for metal or good quality cutters for specific flowers you would like to do.

Have you read ShirelyW's posts in the Cake Decorating section? It has some great information on getting started with Gumpaste flowers.

You can buy almost all this stuff at Walmart in their craft section.

The foam sponge squares can be bought by themselves at Michael's, Hobby Lobby, and Joann's.. I'm not sure if they have that at Walmart or not. If you pick up one of those kits (not buy) just to look at it, you can see the wooden rolling pin they're talking about. It's basically just a dowel rod, that's been rounded on the ends.

Florist tape can be found at walmart, as well.

Someone already gave you a suggestion for the flower formers, with the paper towel rolls, but I think you can also use egg cartons, or just about anything with a curve to it.

Tapered spatula.. hrm.. I'm pretty sure (not positive) that can also be bought at walmart, in the cake decorating aisle. Modeling sticks, I'm not sure if they can be bought separately, but they're basically like skewers. A bit thicker, but still.. just curved on one end and pointed on the other. (If I recall correctly)

All of this, of course, is if you're looking for more reasonably priced than a craft store. I love shopping at Hobby Lobby and Joann's, but sometimes I can save up to 3 dollars on just one item (and I'm usually buying several items) just by shopping at Wally World. icon_wink.gif The exact same item. It's crazy. That and Walmart is about 20 minutes closer to my home.. heh

I hope this has helped some. Good luck!!

Holly

**edit** you can find a lot of the metal cutters there too. I'd try walmart first, then the craft stores. I'm thrifty, I can't help it, but this stuff adds up after a while; and if it's the exact same thing, I don't see the point in paying dollar or three more, just because it's in a different store.
