hi! I am new here, and have been hired to do a cake for the CURVES fitness center's summer open house. Any ideas? It is a women's only gym, with a circuit of 17 machines spaced between break pads.
I am looking for something amazing, but not super difficult!
im agreeing with joannb here. everyone i've met who is/has been a member of curves has serious weight problems. i don't think they would appreciate cake at their gym. would you serve dougs hard lemonade at an AA meeting?
maybe offer to do something else, like sugar free protein peanut butter bars. (i've had them, they're really really good!)
BTW: SummitSweets -- W E L C O M E ! ! !
another idea: how good are you at figure modeling? if so, could do large sheet cake w/ little figures on top exercising -- someone on treadmill, stationery bike, lifting weights, etc.
cake that looks like a big bunch of balloons?
this could even be a bunch of cupcakes all massed together (easy to serve!) w/ ribbons attached.
-------------------
and as for the "I would be so offended -- this is SO wrong viewpoint --
such an "activist viewpoint" would be highly offensive to me if I were the customer -- I know what I want and if you are going to brow beat me, tell me I'm wrong -- then I know where the door is -- Toodles!
The customer has requested a cake -- the customer gets a cake -- not a lecture on diet, on fitness, etc.
im not talking about cake customer relations, im speaking from years experience working with people who seriously struggle with their weight. in this instance i care more about them than the customer. and the old mantra that the customer is always right is for the birds. sometimes customers are NOT right, and sometimes you shouldn't give in to every request they make. she doesn't have to be mean about it, but simply suggesting that the owners clientele would really love ____ instead of cake, and that she can make it really cool looking would be appropriate here.
Umm,as a person who fighs my weight every single day, I have indeed gone to places, like my gym, the Y, curves even and been confronted by very yummy looking cakes. I was never upset or angry because saying no is just part of your daily life. It is one of the reasons losing weight is so hard. Because unlike drinking or smoking, which you can just TOTALLY stop doing, you can not indeed stop eating. HOWEVER.... you have to learn to make your own wise choices. Which sometimes means stepping away from the cake. In fact, when I was a member of curves MOST of the women there were already very fit. I don't think it is a bad thing for companies to offer treats at open houses, it usually isn't just for the people who are already members, it's to draw other cake loving people to the business, and maybe show them what a great place it would be, how comfortable, how friendly etc. Not only that, but if everone was So nosey as to automatically say, well GOD the people who work out at curves must already be so fat, they are for sure the type of people who shouldn't ever... ever deserve a treat again! Well, first off it's not up to you, or curves.. it's up to each person on their own. Plus, if any of you are trying to open a business, you're not going to do very well questioning WHo is eating your cake once the order is made. It's better for business to say, Well great another order I hope the folks over at Curves are THRILLED with the job I do!" I mean even if the people don't eat the cake, they have kids who have parties, and family members with birthdays, graduations and so on. Make the cake, do a great job and sit back and watch the orders roll in. It's not your job, or anyone else's to be the diet/moral police. It's your job to take the orders and make them. Would you say to a diabetic, on their birthday well i'm sorry but I heard you're diabetic I will NOT make you a cake, even if it isn't just for you, but for your family members and friends as well.. I doubt it... Geesh people overthink things WAY to much

and as one who has struggled, is struggling, and always will be struggling with his weight and having a sister in the same category and friends........(let's just say that new research that friends and family make you fat seems very reasonable to me...) oh and BTW --- I make the michelin man look like a bean pole ---
it's just a cake
cake=celebration
no one is forcing them to eat it.
there is far too much of minding other peoples business going on in the world
----
the original request was for a cake design -- not a lecture on what she should do to change the customer's mind, about how wrong the request was and by extension how wrong it would be for her to fulfill it.
I think cake is fine....it is the way people celebrate...maybe it will just remind people that eventhough you may be watching your weight...you can have a small taste of whatever you want. everything in moderation is my life motto!
I like the Logo idea for a cake though. I would try that. ![]()
i'm a member of curves, have been for two months now, and i also got my mom to join. she has more weight to lose than i do, but i am currently 5'6", and 145 lbs...actually the people that are at my curves are not "mostly overweight". we are people with sucess stories, and a cake at a special event would not offend me. now if they had it every day sitting in the front mocking me as i came in the door, that would be another thing.
curves is not a usual gym with weights and treadmills, etc. we have specialty machines that work on hydraulics. the best thing for you to do would be go onto mycurves.com, start a free account, and that will let you go into a section that shows you each machine and how it works. when i have a cake order, i try to use every means of research that i can, and going to their website would give you a feel for the organization.
curves usually has a monthly "theme" or promotion going on, so maybe you could go to your local curves and see what it currently is ...example, we just go through doing a "camp curves" theme. our theme just switched from that to "making memories; a camp curves reunion", but i'm not sure that that is a nationwide theme.
maybe you could do a "woman power" theme to your cake, which is the whole concept of curves.
i would also suggest maybe doing the "diabetic white cake" recipe here on this site. i will be trying it this weekend, but it does have 5 stars.
hi! I was just looking for a few ideas...not really whether I should sell them a cake or not. If you are all saying that no cake can ever be served where someone who is struggling with their weight will be, then I am sorry, but we would all be out of jobs!!
I am thinking the LOGO idea, or a replica of our favorite, or rather least favorite machine will be what I will go with.
Thanks, Mixinvixen, Doug, and Jen for the ideas, and support!
I think you should do a fabulous cake, which is just what they're asking for. The logo is a great one, and it should be wonderful, maybe you could even do some extra little cards to put out with your info, so that the people who enjoy it know how to get ahold of you for their own future cake needs
Whatever you end up doing, will be great! Don't let this be discouraging to you... Just make the cake do a great job and enjoy all the other orders that come rolling in ![]()

I'm a Curves member and I eat cake.
Whatever ya make, I think it should be chocolatey chocolate with chocolate ganache in the middle and maybe a chocolate fountain coming out of the top with a place to stick your tongue and let in run right in
NO FAIR!!!!!!!!!
guys can't join!
I agree with the logo idea it wouldnt be super complicated and you could really make it something special for them
I went to curves a few years ago and they had a T-shirt that had a yield sign on it and in the diamond shape or yield shape was a curve sign you know the wavy line and it said curves loved that t shirt that would be simple
