I had a new pan and wanted to play with is and did a couple test cakes to get comfortable with it. (my husband calls it my "bonding time")

I did a chocolate cake with chocolate BC frosting. My son hates being served a naked cake (this term for undecorated cakes). In the mind of a 6 year old, he wants something fancy just like my customers get when I do test runs. I can't blame him so I figure it's just more practice.

So to keep it from being naked I threw a #2 or #3 tip on a bag of extra frosting and just did a quick freehand all over. It was sloppy, it wasn't "pretty" but it wasn't "naked" for him either. He was impressed and that is all that mattered.

I posted pics of it on a woman's forum (the thread was a "what did you do today? type thing") So my answer was "make this" and I attached a picture. I explained this was no where near professional or what I would sell to someone etc.

The reply from one gal just irked me to no end.

"I assume you meant to do a stipple effect but I think in your cake world you call it a fillagre. Your pattern was poorly done and here is how we do it in quilting and you need to do the same but in a cake decorator's way" She then proceeded to tell me exactly how to do a stipple effect on a cake. (Basically don't cross back over your lines and make/leave bumps in the pattern)

My reply was as nice as I could make it. "No my intent was not to do any effect, just do lines in a sloppy pattern all over it. " I nicely thanked her for her feedback and for a second time posted saying that I "threw on the lines and would never sell this cheap looking cake to a customer."

She replied back and told me not to post pics if I didn't want to be corrected on my errors. (MY ERRORS!!!!!! tapedshut.gificon_mad.giftapedshut.gificon_mad.gif )

Thankfully another gal who's pretty blunt told her to shut up and said "when you post pics of your quilts we don't pick them apart and tell you how to do them better/different so shut up about her cakes."

Now don't get me wrong I can take feed back on my cakes on how to do it better... FROM OTHER DECORATORS not a quilter.

That is my biggest pet peeve though... non decorators telling me how to decorate a cake. I almost always listen because every now and then you get a true gem where their suggestion really is good and does work.

Thank you for allowing me my rant. I have to go bake a cake now. It's one of the "do your own thing I trust you" cakes. I might make it a fillagree and repost a new picture there just to prove to her... no then she will post "see me telling you how to do it worked".

I'll just never post a picture of my work there again. Those that are smart enough to figure out how to access my blog from my profile info can see what I do. thumbs_up.gif

I tell you there are alot of wackos out there on the net!! You just never know who you'll bump into. Good for the lady who told her to shut up icon_lol.gif With regards to posting pics again. Post to your heart's content. Why would some imbecile stranger stop you from what you are accustomed to. To me it sounds like she got to you and you are reacting. Make a quilt, post the pic and let her pick on it till she drops dead!!! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Wow. Whatever woman's forum you were on doesn't sound very supportive. She sounds like a Ms. Know it All who needs to get more hobbies other than quilting! What a turkey.

Wow all I can say is even for some of the nasty threads I've read on here for the most part CC members are really quite civil. Perhaps people are that insecure they just need to make everyone else feel that way. And you always have to wonder if you had been face to face would she have had the nerve to treat you like that?! Don't let it get to you or else then, she's won.

Hope your day goes smoothly and your cakes comes out as planned. icon_biggrin.gif

I dont blame you for being mad. I would have been too. Even if you meant to do a pattern who is she to tell you that you did it wrong. I just love it when people tell me that a certain product I make wasnt up to pastry chef standards or they will say "professional". Well hell, I never claimed to be either one! And if you like my baking and designs than fine, and if you dont fine, dont buy them and certainly dont tell me how to make them if you dont even know how to bake!! People are so rude these days. They really need an "awakening". Or a biatch slap. Either one will do!
And dont ever not do something because someone else made you feel that way. Im sure there are tons that are inspired by your art and it makes you happy so you should do it!

Reminds me of one of my very first brides who wanted her 3-tiered cake "pre-cut". icon_eek.gif

That's why I pretty much ignore industry terms when used by cake civilians, like "half sheet" and "pre-cut". They have no idea what the heck they are talking about but they throw the terms around and pretend they do ..... then want to get all pi$$y about it when the 3-tier cake arrives NOT pre-cut!

Are you serious? Someone really wanted a pre-cut cake? How in the world would you precut a tiered cake! Oh dear, I am just picturing it and it is so funny. Pre-cut cake. That is a good one.

I think people like this sit in forums and chat rooms and wait for an opportunity to slam others or to belittle, or to sound right - I bet they would never do this if not for the anonymity of the computer! It emboldens the cyber bullies.

Wow, a precut tiered cake? Now Ive heard everything! Yah, I think your right that they think if they throw terms around that they think they sound like they know what their talking about.
Get this, I had one recently that complained that her black accents made her white fondant underneath them green and she was pissed! Well first of all, who would peel them off and care in the first place? And she was one of those people that tried to act like she knew what she was talking about but didnt. She had a fondant cake sitting out all day and then complained that the fondant was hard. If she knew anything about cakes like she said she did she would of known that would happen!! Ok, done complaining. Sorry to interrupt the thread!
