how long will buttercream icing last if I frost a dummy cake? usually I use fondant, but it is expesive, and I am tired of making my own mmf...too messy.

If you use a crusting, all shortening icing, it will last weeks, at least. however, it will be more easy to damage.

Royal icing is also a good choice. Both will yellow over time, and you will want to keep them out of the direct sun.

Royal icing is great....but you sure don't have the "time" forgiveness, as it sets up pretty fast.

Hey!

I have 2 BC iced dummy cakes, and 1 fondant with quite a bit of BC decoration on it that were made in January of this year. They still look great!
